His Last Week Overview of the Last Week of the Savior’s Mortal Ministry
First Day • Jesus arrives in Jerusalem • He secures a donkey and a colt to ride through the gates of Jerusalem • “Very Great Multitude” greets Him • Jesus goes directly to the temple • He retires to Bethany for the night
Second day • Jesus returns to temple • He challenges the Jewish religious leadership by driving out the outer court area of the temple • He clears the temple courts of people tracking and making money from foreign exchange • “It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.” (Matt. 21:13) • In the evening, Jesus returns to Bethany
Third day • Priests challenge Jesus for previous day’s action • Jesus relates parables that offend the religious leaders • He openly denounces them and condemns them as hypocrites • Jesus teaches only the Twelve from here out • Jewish leaders plan Jesus’ death • One of Jesus’ own disciples offers to betray Him
Fourth day • Jesus knows of the plot • He spends His day outside of the city • The record of this day is silent…
Fifth day • Jesus commemorates Passover meal privately with the Twelve. • He introduces a new ordinance – the sacrament • He prophesies his death and betrayal • Jesus goes to Gethsemane with eleven (Judas left) • Jesus suffers the “pain of all men” and bleeds from every pore • He is seized that night • Brought before an illegal trial
Sixth day • Jewish leaders charge Jesus with two crimes • They attempt to discredit Him • Jesus is brought before Pilate, the Roman governor • Jesus’ death sentence is pronounced • Jesus was crucified • Before nightfall His body was removed from cross and buried in a sealed tomb
Seventh day • The Jewish Sabbath • Jesus’ body remained in tomb • His spirit ministered in the realm of departed spirits
Day of the resurrection • Jesus emerges from the tomb • He appears before Mary • Jesus is seen by many witnesses • “These are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.” (John 20:31)
