Goals • Explore sun and wind influence on lakes • Determine how temperate zone lakes differ from tropical lakes • Learn about meromictic lakes • See water movements in action (and create some too!) • Use models to simulate real-world conditions
Procedures • Follow lab handout • Collect data and enter in Tables on pages 108, 110-111 • While lakes are heating, start with calculations or ask questions • Be sure that you answer the questions as you go along sketch pictures, describe what you see
Procedures, continued • Be sure that you understand what causes the limits to mixing in each lake type (Temperate, Tropical, Meromictic) • Observe convection cells, seiches, advection • Heat budget calculations simplified in this lab • Use Tables on pages 109 and 112 • Have as much fun as possible
Consequential Questions • How are temperate and tropical zone lakes similar? How do their thermal resistances to mixing compare? How do their heat budgets compare? • Is it appropriate to separate heat and wind action? • How important are water movements to shaping temperature distributions?
