2. Africa viewed from space: Important Rivers/basins
3. The Volta Basin
4.
Since 1963 to date, the Volta Basin Research Project (VBRP) of the University of Ghana has been studying the ecology, sociology, hydrology, and problems in the Volta basin and developing solutions.
There are many challenges and problems:
(1) Health Problems
(2) Agricultural Problems
(3) Social problems
(4) Infrastructural problems
(5) Environmental problems, etc.
5. 1 Example: Health Problems The raw untreated water continues to be the major source of water to the riverine communities
Water is fetched by stepping into the river which habours weeds with the snail host of the Bilharzia parasite
Even though some communities are provided with bore holes, most inhabitants still prefer to fetch water directly from the Volta lake
Bilharzia prevalence rate: 40-60% in most communities
6. Example 2: Agricultural/fisheries Over fishing in the Volta lake: only fish of small sizes caught
7. Unsustainable fishing methods have become very common
8. Gravid fish are attracted into the bamboo to spawn and are caught and eggs extruded and discarded
9. What are the possible solutions to these myriad of problems?
Today, the VBRP welcomes you all to a Seminar/forum to discuss these issues
It is our hope that by the end of the day, we all would have:
gained some further understanding of the problems
proposed some possible solutions to these problems
discussed some suggestions for the WAY FORWARD
10.
On behalf of the VBRP, I thank you all for finding time to be with us this morning and I hope you will stay throughout the technical sessions as well.
Thank You
