East Asian Languages & Literatures • Largest East Asian program in the US, with strong interdisciplinary focus • One of only three programs in the US that offer BA and PhD in Korean • Heritage language instruction and Web-based courses in Cantonese, Mandarin, Taiwanese, Japanese, and Korean • Most comprehensive doctoral program in the US for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean literatures

Hawaiian & Indo-Pacific Languages & Literatures • Enrollments in Hawaiian exceed those of any other indigenous language program in the US • Largest Pacific languages program in the US • Vital languages such as Arabic, Cambodian, Hindi, Filipino, Ilokano, Indonesian, and Thai • Heritage language instruction in Hawaiian, Filipino, Ilokano, Samoan, and Vietnamese

10. Linguistics • Investigates the nature, use, and acquisition of language • Ranked in the top 25% of linguistics departments in the US • Special focus on languages of Asia and the Pacific; home of Oceanic Linguistics • New emphasis on lab-oriented linguistic research

Second Language Studies • Widely regarded as the premier program in the world for second language acquisition • In 1990s, SLS faculty published more articles in the leading journals than faculty in the 2nd- through 4th-ranked programs combined • High volume of applications, high admission standards – accepts 5% of PhD applicants • Millions of dollars in competitive grant funds

Manoa Writing Program • One of the best Writing-Across-the-Curriculum programs in the US • Annually supports 1,000 Writing Intensive classes in 70+ departments • Offers Writing Placement Exam for 1,600 new students each year • Conducts and publishes assessment studies of writing outcomes • Conducts faculty workshops and supports Web site for Writing Intensive instructors

Center for Biographical Research • Publishes Biography, leading international journal in life studies • Offers BA through Liberal Studies, and graduate courses through English Department • Sponsors campus lecture series and biography projects with community organizations • Publishes Biography monograph book series

15. Center for Interpretation & Translation Studies • Established 1987 in response to local interpretation and translation needs • Under re-organization plan, will include affiliate faculty from LLL departments • Offers basic interpretation and translation courses during the semester, plus advanced on-line courses during the summer

16. Language Learning Center • Support services to enhance language learning • Teaching and Curriculum Center – faculty development • Multimedia Computer Labs – computer-assisted instruction • Audio/video production – materials development • Satellite dish, connection to campus ITV network – uplink/downlink live programming

17. Improving the nation’s capacity for teaching and learning foreign languages via training, research, and development • On-line catalog features over 100 diverse publications • $8,000,000 in NFLRC and related grants since 1990
