They live everywhere—in air, soil, rock, and water. • microscopic organisms are found in plants and animals as well as in the human body. • members of one of four major groups: bacteria, viruses, fungi, or protozoa.

4. Microbes were discovered by…. Two fellows of the Royal Society between 1655-1683 Robert Hooke first published a description of the microfungus Mucor Antoni Van Leeuwenhoek observed and described microscopic protozoa and bacteria
