The ozone layer • High above the Earth there is an invisible layer of a gas called ozone. The ozone layer does a very important job. It stops invisible, harmful rays from the sun from reaching the earths surface.
What is going to happen • Sea levels could rise between 7 and 23 inches. • It could flood many of South Seas islands and swamp large parts of south East Asia. • Some hundred million people live with 3 feet of mean sea level, and much the worlds population is concentrated in vulnerable coastal cities.
Solving the problem • Scientists have been monitoring damage to the ozone layer for many years. • In Britain it is one degree Celsius cooler now than it was in the days of Domesday book.
When did global warming start ?? • Global warming started thousands of years ago, but it didn’t start because of something or someone it started taking place in a natural cycle.
How you can help ???? • If you walk to school instead of car, you are helping to stop the planet from heating up. • Too much carbon dioxide in the air causes global warming. • We can help to stop global warming by planting new trees in places where forests have been cut down.
Is the earth getting hotter • In the future it will 6 and a half degrees hotter in our days that it used to be.
Disappearing ozone • Scientists are finding that the ozone layer is getting thinner everywhere in the northern hemisphere, rather than in just one place.
