Teacher Notes - VELS VELS (Victorian Essential Learning Standards) This webquest was created for a grade 3/4 class. Dimensions in the technology domain concentrate on ICT for visualising thinking, ICT for creating and ICT for communicating. The Victorian VELS website (referenced in bibliography) tells us that: “Learning in this domain enables students to focus on the task to be accomplished rather than on the technology they are using.” ICT for creating – Progression point 2.5 Creation of an information product to inform a specific audience, following a collaboratively determined design. CT for visualising thinking – Progression point 2.75 – 3 Use of ICT tools to list ideas in logical sequence. Students retrieve saved thinking strategies and edit them for use in similar situations. Use of familiar software and editing techniques to create graphic organizers. Organization and analysis of data using familiar software. ICT for creating – Progression point 2.75 – 3 Creating folders and saving data. Creation of informative material aimed at specific audience. Identifying and correcting spelling manually and with spellchecker techniques. The purpose of passwords. Creation of information products to assist in problem solving. Use of ICT tools to capture and save images. An understanding of formatting features such as font styles and sizes. ICT for communicating – Progression point 2.75 – 3 Location of websites using a nominated search engine. Creation of collaboratively defined folders in their mailbox. Initiation of composition of email messages to known and unknown audiences. Develop and apply simple criteria to evaluate located information. Teacher Notes - Other INTRODUCTION Students are divided into 6 groups. Activities are appropriate for Grade 3/4. VELS Level 3. Some tasks require groups of 4; others require groups of 2 due to varying levels of involvement and difficulty. Webquest should be spread over six weeks as theme of ‘ice cream’ can be enhanced through other subjects. Eg. Art – design a logo for a Mr Whippy van; English – book: Knight, B. (1977) From Cow to Icecream; General: Watching recording of television show on ABC2 This is Daniel Cook – Making Ice Cream. Learning Outcomes: Students should improve confidence in the use of Word and navigating through a search engine. They will practice their quiz and research skills through the use of Quia and Kidspiration. They will access images for creative activities from the internet. They will create MindMaps, conduct an email survey and experiment and finally; create their own product to eat. It is recommended to trial run the making of ice cream ‘bag method’ so you become familiar with the process and can guide students when they produce their ice cream.
