Post Secondary Options • College • 4 year college • 2 year college • Career / Technical School • Military (ASVAB is November 18th at Wolcott HS) • Employment
DO YOU HAVE A LIST?? • Have you started to narrow? • Ideally apply to 4-7 schools • 1-2 Reach Schools • 2-3 50/50 schools • 1-2 Safe schools (Merit Money $$$ possible) • Have you considered academics and finances when developing your list.
Meet Admissions • College Fair was September 25th • OCT 15th: WHS Senior College Visitation Day • Schedule interview (if offered) • Sign up for College Rep visits in the Career Center • Do an interview right here!
STANDARDIZED TESTS • Students must register to take the SAT I and/or ACT at: • www.collegeboard.com, www.act.org • You can opt to take both SAT and ACT • Some schools may require SAT II Subject Tests and some are Test Optional • Test prep is absolutely essential to success on these tests • There are free SAT prep resources on NAVIANCE and Collegeboard • NVCC is offering a class as well for both the Nov test. The flyer is in your handouts • Wolcott High School CEEB Code: 070-871 • If you qualify for a fee waiver – see your counselor BEFORE registering
ACT TEST DATES 2011–2012 ACT Test Dates
SAT / ACT • You are responsible for sending your scores to every college you are applying to through Collegeboard or actstudent.org • Do not wait until the last minute to send your scores, processing takes a few weeks • Subject Tests
Activity Sheet • To request a letter of recommendation • You child needs to have finished their Activity Sheet • Samples in Naviance • Check for spelling errors • Don’t forget to include activities outside of school as well as in school. • Should include grades 9-12 • The more thorough the better the letter we can write
Recommendation Letters • You typically need two teacher recommendation letters • Try to get one from a subject that pertains to your major • You likely will also need a Guidance Counselor letter • FERPA WAIVER: Guidance sends all recommendations – you are responsible for requesting • Thank you Note
College Essay • Find out how many essays are needed - How many of your schools take the Common Application? - If a school doesn’t take the Common App they may have their own essay topic • At least one person should proofread your essay • Most likely your English teacher or guidance counselor
Essay Continued • NEVER SEND AN ESSAY WITH GRAMMATICAL ERRORS!!! • Follow the guidelines: word amount, length of essay, topic
APPLICATION PROCESS • Apply through https://www.commonapp.org/Login (NEXT WEEK WE WILL HAVE YOU SET UP A COMMON APP ACCOUNT DURING ENGLISH CLASS) • Or through the college website if they don’t accept the Common Application • If you qualify for fee waivers see your counselor • After you have applied fill out a transcript request form and hand it in to your counselor
Transcript Release forms must be returned to guidance not later than 5 school days before the deadline to ensure processing. Know your deadlines!
Community College • www.ct.edu • Most programs are 2 year associate degree • Process for applying is different than 4 year colleges • Send application to individual community college • Do not need to send test scores, rec letters or essay
FINANCIAL AID FAFSA • Submit ASAP after January 1st but before March 1st. • www.fafsa.ed.gov CSS Profile • File in early fall of senior year! • List of CSS schools can be found on www.collegeboard.com Scholarships • Local
Scholarships • Local scholarships will start to come in around November • Visit Naviance frequently for updates to the list • Pay attention to deadlines !!!Free Money!!!

NCAA, National Collegiate Athletic Association • Student athletes intending to play NCAA Division I or II sports must register with the NCAA • It is important to learn about the NCAA requirements early and understand the NCAA rules. • Typically, students register in their Junior year • Visit www.ncaa.org to learn more.
Advice • Make an appointment with your counselor ASAP and visit frequently • Don’t procrastinate • Do well in your classes • Try not to stress out
