What is Your Chapter’s “Floor Plan?” • What are the products and services that you are “selling?” • What should we offer? Planning Your Educational Programs
It can be a challenge • How can you meet the educational needs of your diverse membership? Planning Your Educational Programs
Is there a solution? • Provide a wide variety of topics and delivery methods. Planning Your Educational Programs
Audio Seminars • Live audio seminar • 90 minute seminar featuring top experts speaking to a live, on-air audience • Feature handout materials (slides, talking papers) and opportunity for live Q&A • Generally conducted from 12 Noon to 1:30 PM Eastern time on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday • Many Chapters host these every month • Can be in addition to other monthly programs, or, when necessary, can be in lieu of another monthly program Planning Your Educational Programs
Audio Seminars • Pre-Recorded Audio Seminars • Great “hip-pocket” programs – can be a life saver when a speaker cancels on short notice • Combine live local instructor with taped instructor and handout materials • CD can be paused, fast forward, rewind at any time to allow local instructor to elaborate, discuss in depth with audience • Create Your Own • Find a local speaker • Setup a conference call • Email slides to participants Planning Your Educational Programs
Mini Seminars • 1-2 Hour Seminars • Affordable • Minimizes time away from work • Lunch n’ Learn Series • Very informal • Brown-bag, no-cost, no-host lunch • Typically held at a worksite within short walk/drive for target audience • Generally is a supplement to other Chapter activities, but not in lieu of other Chapter activities • Breakfast Bunch • Similar to Lunch n’ Learn but with bagels • Attendees start the day with a short training event and then head to work and don’t have to interrupt the flow of the day Planning Your Educational Programs
Forums • Panel Discussion • Select a “hot topic” • Two to four speakers • Allow time for discussion • Dayton Chapter Variation—”Celebrity Waiters” • Contracting leaders wait on members tables for tips for charity, then serve as panel members for the program • Round Table • Everyone can participate • Ask a questions • Share experiences • Little preparation needed • No presentations • No speakers • No pre-selected topics Planning Your Educational Programs
Webinars • Integrate telephone and internet technology • Conference call with live presenter • Internet slide presentation • Forum for submitting questions • Convenient training • Participants can join in from anywhere Planning Your Educational Programs
Career Fair • Invite local recruiters • Invite local organizations • Invite experienced professionals as career coaches • Set up an intern corner • Great way to provide value to student members Planning Your Educational Programs
Educational Conferences • Full-Day, multi-topic, multi-speaker Education Conferences are usually quite popular with members and non-members • Involves considerable labor to execute successfully and usually involves financial risk • Can also be significant fund-raisers for the Chapter • Chapter has more control on costs • Partner with other local chapters, associations or businesses • Don’t forget teaming with law firms who have a contracting specialty • National Staff has considerable expertise in conducting such events and is willing to offer advice Planning Your Educational Programs
Small Business Fairs • Provides opportunity for Small Businesses and Large Businesses to network for the benefit of both • SBA, PTACs, Government SB Directors, Corporate SBLOs have this as a part of their mission • Often easy for NCMA Chapter to co-host such events without having to take any financial risk and with only minimal labor investment • Local Congressional reps are often sponsors, too • Typical program runs ½ day or so • Keynote Speaker • Breakout learning/education activities focused towards needs of SBs • Meet & Greet or Matchmaking Activity (Large and Small) • Booths and Exhibits • Breakfast or Luncheon • Excellent PR for NCMA Chapter • Can be great source for recruiting new members from the SB community Planning Your Educational Programs
Contracted Formal Training Courses • NCMA Chapter brokers agreement between multiple major local employers and an established commercial training firm to bring in multi-day courses like – • Introduction to Federal Contracting • Government Contract Law • Cost & Pricing for Government Contracts • For a fixed-price, paid in advance to NCMA Chapter, each employer gets ‘x’ guaranteed seats in the course at a greatly reduced rate • NCMA Chapter contracts with commercial training firm for on-site delivery to an audience of ‘y’ students • NCMA Chapter then hosts the event and sells additional seats (up to class capacity of ‘y’-’x’) at a ‘fair market’ price • In certain locations this can be a win-win-win for the employers, the training company and the NCMA Chapter • With careful price-setting, successful contract negotiation, and good cost control this can be substantial fund raiser for the local Chapter Planning Your Educational Programs
Joint Programs • Co-host with other local chapters • Form partnerships with similar associations in your local area • Share program ideas and presentations with other chapters nation wide • Best Chapter Programs can be posted on the NCMA intranet • Successful programs can be shared by writing a short article for the ChaptersConnect! newsletter Planning Your Educational Programs
