  1. Energy from Waves and Tides By Rushil Desai and Macallan Brown

  2. What is Wave Energy? • an essentially shared, concentrated wind energy • created from the transfer of energy from the wind as it moves above the water’s surface • could play a major part in the world’s effort to fight climate change • can provide many job oppurtunities in construction and maintenance

  3. The Resource • The Wave energy around the British Isles is equal to three times UK electricity demand, which means it is possible to convert a sizeable fraction of the wave energy to electricity • it approx. could receive 15-25% of current UK demand • Not everywhere is good for Wave Energy

  4. Pelamis WEC • used to create energy by hydraulic rams, which pump high pressure fluid through hydraulic motors • 180m long and 4m in diameter (each machine is rated at 750 KW) • produces 25-40% of the full rate output and is mostly safe • each machine can meet the sufficient power to power about 500 homes

  5. Pelamis WEC

  6. Waves&Whistles • as waves go by, the waves push wind up turbulent generator and provide energy for the navigation light • Limpet- is a shoreline energy/converter off the island of Islay • uses the priciple of an esclitating water column • Islay- it is a pneumatic power which is converted from wave energy

  7. The Limpet

  8. Attenuator • are long multi-segmented floating structures that are parallel to the direction of the waves • the different heights of the waves cause flexing where the segments connect and the flexing is connected to hydraulic pumps or other converters

  9. Overtopping Devices • Onshore and Offshore • Let the reservoirs fill with water then let the water go down which powers the turbines (The Wave Dragon and TAPCHAN)
