9 Tips for running a GIAG ...So you’ve received a confirmation email Everything is booked You have an itinerary of what to do. Your committee members have been allocated tasks and you have all your materials ready. How do you make sure that your session is successful!?
1. Hand in your signup sheet Collect a signup sheet from the LUU Helpdesk. Signup sheet must be submitted to the Activities Reception within 10 days of the session.
2. Organise! “It was badly organised and ... the society lacked communication” “It looked like they were really lost and didn't know what to do” “Lack of structure, lack of flow, lack of organisation and lack of initiative” “Everyone was complaining about the fact that they had to wait a long time.” “it looked like they‘d decided what to do 10 minutes before it started” “There were too many people and a lot of people were standing at the back...we couldn’t hear what was going on....” “The timing was wrong as in the booklet it said 6.30 pm start. We got there at 6:25 and it had already started... “We had to wait for them to run back to the Union and get the keys!” There wasn’t enough equipment for everyone... Obvious? Well....obviously not!
4. Subsidise! Could people buy tickets cheaper themselves? Could people get their transport cheaper themselves? Do them a deal! Is it cheaper for the student to do the activity themselves? They say there is an exception to every rule... ...but everyone loves a bargain. No exception.
5. Remember...ise! No exceptions HAND IN YOUR SIGN UP SHEET! No sheet = no money.
6. Talk to me! Making changes? Need to cancel? Last minute inspiration? Let me know!! C.Gower-Smith@leeds.ac.uk
7. Talk to them! “I went because I wanted to learn about the society before I joined, but they didn’t talk to me. I didn’t feel welcome....I don’t think I will join after all.” People come to learn about your society – tell them about it! Be friendly!
9. Run a social afterwards If your event is not a social, why not run one afterwards? Remember that it should be suitable for everyone
