The Proposal Research for Script Idea. Teya Cridland He’s Behind You. Nobody wants to find a note in their locker…
What is the idea… • My scrip idea is influence by the Stephen King novel and film “IT.” • My idea for my script is based on a psychotic clown that lives in a school, in the roof. He captures school kids to create an army of clowns.
Inspiration… • I have always been a massive fan of Stephen Kings and the way he can build such tension and suspense in a book. When coming up with an idea, I had originally always wanted to do something dark. Coming up with an original idea was hard, so I looked at the internet for some inspiration, then I remembered Stephen Kings book “IT.” The whole idea of a clown luring children with a balloon through drains and toilets I thought was so creepy, that even just looking at the blurb made me scared to go near any drains. This is the sort of effect I wanted. When I finalised with the idea of clowns, I started building up on the actual clown character. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIZJqTfUUrY • I didn’t want him looking like a circus clown, that almost just looks pathetic. The Joker out of The Dark Knight will have some influence in my clown, as he is very sinister.
Storyline… • Where is it set? The story will be set in a college/school in the middle of the city centre, in the UK. • When? It will be set at evening time, when everyone has left the school and there are just a couple of students staying behind. I have chose night time, because it helps create more tension. • What? The story will start with a news bulletin mentioning the disappearance of local students. We then have a establishing shot of the school building at night time, and then a sound effect of a girl screaming and a evil/ sinister laugh. Fade out, new scene, day time and a group of students walking in to college. The story continues, with this groups day at school, they notice unusual things, the normal thing you expect in a horror. Comes to night time. • Clowns motive: To create a army of clowns, to take over city. Psychotic man that when captures student, by leaving a note in their locker, then sneaking up behind them. Then takes them up into the roof and ties them up and turns them into clowns. • Duration: I aim for it to be about 7/8 minutes long.
Tone… • Dark, scary, suspense, horror. • I want the story to have people on the edge of their seats, but not wanting to know what happens next. From the sound of it, it sounds like a typical crap American horror movie. However, I want it to have a very dark tone. No humour. I want build the tension up throughout the film. Make the audience hate the psychotic clown. I will come up with a back story for the clown, so it gives him a reason to be doing this. I feel this will give a better connection with the audience and clown, because you can relate to why he is doing it. • To create this tone, the use of contrast of light and dark, depth of field, close ups, distorted shots… • NO HAPPY ENDING.
Beginning… • We introduce the characters. • Find out the need of the Antagonist. What? And why? • What is his desire? • Start to build the tension. • First turning point…
Middle… • …First turning point. • Introduce the clowns note. • The problem. • Meet the antagonist. • Learn more about him, how? • Another death. • Second turning point…
End… • …Second turning point • Seeing the clown create army. • Tension builds. • Clowns psychotic character comes out (inspiration the joker) • The army is created… • The end will be left on a cliff hanger…Final shot: Wide shot, army of clowns walking out of the college in to town centre.
Research… Coulrophobia -fear of clowns
Types of Clowns… The Auguste- Accompanying the white clown there is often another clown variety known as an auguste or red clown; the auguste's role is different from that of the white clown. In strict classical European circuses of the past, the augustes were never described as clowns because, technically, they were not instigators but recipients of the comic doings. The augustes are the ones who get the pies in the face, are squirted with water, are knocked down on their backside, sit accidentally in wet paint, or have their pants ripped off. The base colour for the auguste makeup is red or flesh tone. The eyes and the mouth are encircled in white and the features are highlighted, again, traditionally in red and black. The auguste is usually costumed in baggy plaids accented with colourful polka dots or loud stripes. They boast wide-collared shirts, long neckties, unruly collared wigs and oversized noses and shoes.
… • The whiteface holds the highest status in the clown hierarchy and is the oldest of the clown archetypes. In modern times, when whitefaces perform with other clowns, they usually function as the straight man, "top banana" or the leader of the group. Whiteface clowns use "clown white" makeup to cover their entire face and neck, with none of the underlying flesh colour showing. Features are then usually painted on in either red or black. The whiteface clown is traditionally costumed more extravagantly than the other two clown types. They often wear the ruffled collar and pointed hat which typify the average person's idea of a "clown suit"
Stephen King- IT • Story- In 1960, a group of social outcasts who are bullied by a gang of greasers lead by Henry Bowers are also tormented by an evil demon who can shape shift into a clown and feed on children's fears and kill them. Character of the Joker… • Appearing to be the most evil, deranged, and flat out psychotic killer of all comic book villains. The Joker views murder as sport, and will not hesitate to toy with his food before he eats it, even if said food are the men he has hired to work for him. As intimidating as he is psychotic, he still manages to recruit hordes of henchmen despite his maniacal insanity. The Joker also has a melted cliché clown face, the origins of which differ depending on the continuity he is used in. Some incarnations of The Joker see him wearing actual make up while others show his skin actually having been bleached. He also traditionally has green hair and red lips, to complete the look of the psycho clown. His methods are unpredictable and incalculable. He does things according to his own twisted sense of logic, and does not desire money. In all his shapes and forms, The Joker remains as one of the scariest and most ingenious of all comic book villain history. • Taken from http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0000180/bio • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASIYi6DhlK4 • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfmkRi_tr9c&feature=related
