Twizzler Trick Pre-assessment of fraction knowledge using Twizzler candy Jeanne Chauvin West Salem Elementary
Day 1- Assessment of Fractions • Place fraction posters (1/3, ¼, 1/8 and 1/12) around the room and ask students to walk to the poster that shows the amount of a Twizzler that they would like to eat. • Assess which students get “tricked” by the denominator. • see the video
Comparing fractions lesson • Cut Twizzlers to show fractions from the posters. Distribute to students. • Discuss comparing fractions with same numerators. Use symbols to compare. See the lesson
Day 2- Twizzlers again • Use same posters as day 1 but move the location of the posters. • Tell students to move to the fraction of the Twizzler they would like to have. • Assess students understanding of comparing fractions with same numerators. • See the results from day 2
