Station FirmwarePermanent change to FlashROM • There maybe need for permanent FW change: • When driver that is not able to load FW • When using the PC Card in Outdoor Router • Permanent change to STA FW to be made by so-called “WSU” utility • Made available via web site, to allow field upgrades • Products leaving factory always upgraded to most recent version • WSU available on release CD-ROM • Downgrading possible if previous version of Utility has been kept • Execute WSU Utility (e.g. double click the Icon in the Windows explorer)

Driver Installation/configuration Using EZinstall • Select “Connect to a wireless network” when installing client software: • Driver • Client Manager diagnostic tool • Control Panel Applet for adding/editing driver profiles • Select “Install Base Station”, to install the management/configuration software for the APs
Driver Installation/configuration Using EZinstall • Identify settings collects parameters required to set the first driver profile • Follow on-screen instructions • After all settings have been collected, driver and client manager can be installed • Finally insert the PC card or attach the USB adapter
Driver Installation/configuration Using EZinstall • Select the mode of operation • Peer-to-peer (IBSS) • Using an Residential Gateway • Using an AP (such as AP-500, AP-1000, AP-2000) • Subsequent questions depend on mode selected • Network name (SSID) • WEP encryption settings • Power Management settings
Adding/Editing profilesUsing the configuration wizard • Driver settings form a operational “profile” • Multiple (up to 99) profiles can be created (each having their own parameters) • Parameters are stored in registry (each profile has separate section) • Adding/editing profiles performed using “profile wizard” • Profile wizard can be activated by: • Control panel applet • Menu on the Client Manager’s tray-bar Icon
Adding/Editing profilesUsing the configuration wizard • Provide profile name for later selection • Select type of network operation • Access Point (AP-500, AP-1000, AP-2000) • Residential Gateway • Peer-to-Peer Group (IBSS) • Press “Next”
Adding/Editing profilesAccess Point or Residential Gateway • When selecting Access Point or Residential Gateway: • Enter the Network Name set in the Access Points (= SSID) or, • Press Scan to list the “open” networks that can be sensed from the position of the station (“closed” networks will not show in the scan list) • Default network name for an RG is identified on a sticker on the device • Press “Next” to continue
Adding/Editing profilesAccess Point or Residential Gateway For AP • When using an Access Point: • Select “Enable Data Security”, when needed (when enabled on APs) • Up to 4 keys to be entered • Valid keys are stings of: • 5 ASCII or 10 hexadecimal characters (Silver cards, 64 bit WEP) • 13 ASCII or 26 hexadecimal characters (Gold cards, 128 bit RC4) • Entered keys will be masked with asterisks • Select the active transmission key from the index • When using an Residential Gateway: • Single key to be entered • Press “Next” to continue For RG
Adding/Editing profilesPower Management / IP address switch • Enable/disable power management on PC card, by selecting matching radio button • Press “Next” • Enable/disable “Renew IP Address when selecting this profile” • Will release current IP Address followed by DHCP request for new IP address when profile becomes active • Do not select if the profile defines a network without a DHCP server • Click “Finish” to complete (new profile created)
Adding/Editing profilesPeer-to-Peer operation • When selecting Peer-to-Peer network: • Enter the Network Name of the network to attach to or to that is to be started • Using a Network name used by an active “open” AP will change the operational mode to “Access Point” (station will associate to the access point) • Select the operational channel to use (becomes active channel when starting the network) • Data encryption (on next screen) supports one WEP key only • Power management can not be activated in this mode

Manual installationPCI adapter - general considerations • Requires installation of the “PCI-to-PC Card” converter card (sometimes referred to as “PCI-PCMCIA Bridge” or “PCI Swapbox”) • Once the PCI Swapbox is installed the ORiNOCO PC Card can be inserted in the PCMCIA slot (similar to ISA installation) • Success of installation of the PCI Swapbox depends on: • Type of PC Hardware • Operating System • Version level of BIOS

Manual installationPCI adapter - Windows 95 • Install the PCI card without the ORiNOCO PC Card inserted, in an available slot • The PCI card itself is “plug and play” and will auto-detect the card, and the driver for the generic PCIC controller is installed • Copy the file PCMCIA.INF provided by Agere Systems to the sub-directory windows\inf
Manual installationPCI adapter - Windows 95 • Reboot the PC • Proceed to Device Manager, select the PCIC controller and update the driver (Windows will locate the new .INF file) • Restart the PC • Windows now installed the correct TI1410 Cardbus controller

Manual installationPCI adapter - Win/NT4 Card & Socket Services • On the Control Panel select “Devices” • From the device list select “PCMCIA” • Click the “Startup” button on the right side of the list • Set the Start-up type for the PCMCIA device to “Boot” • Close the window (select OK) and reboot
Manual installationUSB Client adapter - Win98 / 2K • Have the USB Client Driver software accessible by the OS • Connect the ORiNOCO USB Client to the PC • Windows will detect the ORiNOCO USB Client as new hardware and start its wizard • Alternatively select Add New hardware from the Control Panel • Direct the wizard to the location of the driver files

Operating the Client Manager Diagnostic functions - link test • RF link test is the single most important test to verify the quality of the wireless link between two stations • In AP mode link test is always between client station and AP • In peer to peer mode link test is executed between client station and another client to be selected from a list of explored stations • Test results show snapshot readings of SNR, Signal and Noise and indication of attainable data-rate
Operating the Client Manager Diagnostic functions - history chart • History test shows selected values over time • Values to be displayed can be selected from drop list: • SNR • Signal and Noise (two separate lines) • Ranges for Noise, Signal or SNR • Very useful to detect noise spikes
Operating the Client Manager Diagnostic functions - logging • Test results can be logged to disk for later analysis • User identified file • Manual logging (on user command) • Automatic logging (after every x seconds) • Continuous logging
Operating the Client Manager Diagnostic functions - Site Monitor • Site monitor allows a user to “see” all APs with the same network name, from a location. • Display to be configured by the user by selecting items to show from drop down list • AP names can be assigned to locate APs easily. • Names are maintained in file aplist.txt in association with the MAC address of the PC Card in the AP • Can be created by editing or using AP names discovery function
