  1. How does your project use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues? Rachel Jones

  2. How does your project use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues? • Our opening was about a psycotic girl who had a bad home life and therefore stays with and then kills happy families and set them up like dolls at a tea party. • The rest of the film would be about a detective trying to find and help the killer • Because of the gory nature of the deaths and the hunt the detective would be going on, our film would be catagorised as a horror/thriller

  3. Conventional Camera Work in Horror • High angle shots of victims compared to low angle shot of killers make the killer seem powerful and the victim week • Eye level shots of the victims makes the audience sympathise with them • POV shots are used to put the audience in the victims shoes and help them feel sympathy for them • Hand held shots are used to make it hard for the audience to see what is going on • This was used in the film The Blair Witch Project where all of the shots were hand held POV shots which immersed the audience in the action

  4. Camera work • Frame things hidden – in our opening we purposefully left the bodies out of shot in the very beginning so that it would shock the audience when they appeared • Eye level shots victims – we also used eye level shots of the victims to make the audience feel empathy for them • Close up on injury/gore – we used close up shots on the injuries to make the audience uncomfortable and shock them. This is very typical for horror films

  5. Conventional mise-en-scene in Horror • Settings are often abandonned or iscolated and the lighting is usually dark or set at night which creates mystery • Props in horror movies are typically weapons of some kind • The killers costume is ususally more extravigant or features a mask to clearly show that they are the villian • The use of masks with the killers adds a sense of mystery and keeps the audience wondering about their identity • This is shown through the character of Freddy Krueger who wears a mask in the film The Nightmare On Elm Street

  6. Mise-en-scene • Our mise-en-scene began not being conventional to horror with the happy relaxed tea party props • The injury, blood and gore however are typical to horror films • Furthermore the red blinds in the background with the tree branches were very creepy which is typical to horror films as the settings are often quite scary • The killers facial expressions being happy is conventional for horror films as often the killer is not sad about what they’re doing • Close up shot of the killer smiling are also used in the film Silence of the Lambs showing that this is quite conventional for horror • However we did not follow conventions in the fact that the costume allows us to see the killers face

  7. Conventional sound in Horror • Some horror movies do use nursey rhyms but transpose them into a minor key of use different instruments for effect • Horror movies also sometimes use contrapuntal sound of the top of scenes to make the scene seem more weird and un-ususal • For example the creepy music box sound in Anabelle

  8. Sound • Our sound was conventional for horror movies in the fact that it was a non diegetic eery nursey rhym • We also included the diegetic sound of the door shutting • This was to suggest that they were trapped inside • It is conventional for horror movies to use diegetic sound aswell as non diegetic as the non diegetic creates atmosphere and the diegetic outs the audience in the characters perspective

  9. Conventional editing in Horror • Editing in a horror movie is typically very simple • This makes it feel real which adds to the impact • In horror the editing is also times with sound when jump scares are used • This adds the the shock factor of them • During tense moments of action the editing typically speed up to make everything seem more intense • In contrast moments of suspense often have long takes to make them uncomfortable • When editing is slow paced and has been for a while it outs the audience on edge as they will aticipate a jump scare

  10. Editing • In our opening sequence we followed conventions when editing • We use long takes on the killer which would make the audience uncomfortable • We also used quick flashes of the injuries which we synced the sound to so that we could create jump scares

  11. Conventional characters in Horror • In horror movies there is usually a main protagonist this is usually the victim or hero of the film • Then there is usually a villain or supernatural force that becomes the enemy • This is typically a male character • Typically in horror movies there is a group or person that gets killed early which sets up the protagonist to investigate

  12. Character • Unlike most horror movies our killer was female • In was unconventional for horror movies where the killers are mostly male • She is also quite young which is unconventional for horror movies • We did however follow horror movie conventions in the fact that our killer has a troubled past • This would attract a young female audience who might not typically watch horror films • We would also attract an audienc who could slightly relate to the character and her bad upbringing

  13. Conventional representation of characters in Horror • In horror films female characters are typically presented as being weak or just victims • Male characters in horrors are mostly presented as being non believers • The hero is presented as being much weaker and having no chance of defeting the villian but will somehow defy the odds and fight off the villain • The villian is presented as being much stronger that not only the protagonist but everyone else

  14. Representation of character • Unlike conventional horror films are killer is a strong female character unlike how females in horror films are shown as being week the situation • Furthermore she is shown as being un affected • In most horror films women are shown in fear for longer then men and are shown to be more affected by what is happeneing • I made a white and pale pink childlike costume to make her seem innocent which made it more shocking when you seen what she’s done • Furthermore the eye level shot of her face shows how we directed her facial expressions to be creepy and un-nearving which shows her to be powerful unlike conventional female characters

  15. Representation of character • By having a young girl being un affected by a blood drop it represents her as being deranged and insane and clearly shows that she is pschotic • The close up shots of the inuries contrast well with the pale pink and white colours that the killer is wearing and her innocent facial expressions which shows how psycotic she is • The white clothes of the victims suggests their innocence which represent the killer as being more brutal
