  1. 7 mmol/l 4 mmol/l If you fall ill, particularly if you are vomiting, have diarrhoea or fever, your blood sugar will rise and your diabetes may get out of control.

  2. When you fall ill, never stop your insulin! You may even need to inject additional insulin.

  3. Increase self-monitoring of your blood sugar – test every 3 hours. Tests will guide you what additional amount of insulin you need to inject.

  4. Test your urine for acetone.

  5. Try to have your normal meals. If you cannot eat take your food in form of fluid with addition of sugar. When you are vomiting, or you have diarrhoea or a fever you need to take 2-3 litres of fluid (water, tea, juice, salty soup).

  7. If your blood sugar is above 25 mmol/l (450 mg/dl) and/or the acetone in your urine is +++ (3 plus or deep purple) contact your doctor.
