Common Terminology • 3G, 4G, LTE – types of cellular network that connects to the internet wherever there is cellular service • Wifi and Hotspots – connects to the internet through a wireless network and has a short range • Routers – Used to connect to the internet without cords. Easy to install and allows sharing • iOS/Android/Windows 8/Blackberry – types of phones that are commonly used

Smart Phones versus Cell phones • A smart phone can be considered as a mini computer that has the added capability of making and receiving calls • Traditional cell phones are mostly limited to cell calls as well as a few other features • As of July 2012, 58% of teenagers have a smart phone • Functions of a smart phone include, gaming, texting, internet access, social media, GPS based services

Your traditional Cell Phone • Depending on your needs a traditional cell phone can accomplish most of your children needs • Benefits are: low cost, pay per use plans, no access to internet or texting, accomplishes goal of parents staying in touch with their kids • Many devices and services are available from all the major cell phone carriers • Even more controlled devices are available that only allow children to make and receive calls from specific phone numbers: Firefly Mobile, Verizon Migo

The Smart Phone and tablets • The smart phone and tablets are computers • These multi-media platforms allows subscribers "anywhere", "anytime" access to information, news and people, making it more difficult for parents to monitor access and creating another point of access to inappropriate content and contacts. • Access includes Video Streaming, Internet Access, Gaming, Social Media, Texting, Email

  6. Iphone and iPad Parental Control Options (Live Demo) • Apple devices allow multiple levels of restrictions: Phone passwords and Restrictions • Phone password simply locks or unlcoks the phone • Restrictions allows you to control how and what is used on your device

Router Configurations – Option 1 • Internet Access Policy (sampleRouterInternetAccessPolicy.jpg • Time based and device based policies can be defined to allow/block internet access • Domains/Web sites can be explicitly blocked • Rules can be defined to block web sites with specific keywords in the HTTP site address.

Router Configuration – Option 2 • Third Party Web filtering service • Example: http://www.cisco.com/cisco/web/solutions/small_business/products/security/protectlink/index.html • Some routers are compatible with third party web filtering services (Additional fees) • Conveniently control internet traffic from all devices at one single point • Allow/Block specific categories or subcategories

  11. Other non cell phone mobile devices • iPods and iPads also have access to the internet • Wifi hotspots are more prevelent • These devices can also be used to access internet and therefore should also have parental controls turned on

Mobile Device Etiquette • “I will always know the password” • “If I call, answer it” • “Hand the phone to one of your parents promptly at 7:30 p.m. every school night and every weekend night at 9:00 p.m. It will be shut off for the night and turned on again at 7:30 a.m.” • “It does not go to school with you. Have a conversation with the people you text in person. It's a life skill. *Half days, field trips and after school activities will require special consideration.”

  13. Mobile Device Etiquette • “If it falls into the toilet, smashes on the ground, or vanishes into thin air, you are responsible for the replacement costs or repairs. Mow a lawn, babysit, stash some birthday money. It will happen, you should be prepared.” • “Do not use this technology to lie, fool, or deceive another human being. Do not involve yourself in conversations that are hurtful to others. Be a good friend first or stay the out of the crossfire.”

Mobile Device Etiquette • “Do not text, email, or say anything through this device you would not say in person.” • Do not text, email, or say anything to someone that you would not say out loud with their parents in the room. Censor yourself. • “Turn it off, silence it, put it away in public. Especially in a restaurant, at the movies, or while speaking with another human being. You are not a rude person; do not allow the iPhone to change that.”

  15. Mobile Device Etiquette • “Don't take a zillion pictures and videos. There is no need to document everything. Live your experiences. They will be stored in your memory for eternity.” • “Leave your phone home sometimes and feel safe and secure in that decision. It is not alive or an extension of you. Learn to live without it.” • “Play a game with words or puzzles or brain teasers every now and then.” • “Keep your eyes up. See the world happening around you. Stare out a window. Listen to the birds. Take a walk. Talk to a stranger. Wonder without googling.”

  16. Most Importantly! Communication • “You will mess up. I will take away your phone. We will sit down and talk about it. We will start over again. You and I, we are always learning. I am on your team. We are in this together.”

Educational Tools (Demo of Itunes U) • Great example of how these devices can be used for educational purposes is iTunes U • iTunes U is a section of the iTunes Store where users can download free educational course content from many colleges and universities, non-profit educational institutions, and K-12 organizations. • The content, which includes course lectures, lab demos, sports items, and campus tours, comes as audio and video files. The downloads are free. Content from 300 colleges and universities worldwide is available: Arizona State, Duke, Stanford, MIT, Penn State…

  18. iBooks, Library Readers, and other Book apps • Buy latest books in digital format • Some free books are available • Latest titles are available • Apps like Stanza provide access to over 50000 free titles • Overdrive App: over 22000 libraries participate in digital library software. Just need a library card number
