Jesus’ Own Words: The narrow and the broad way – Matthew 7:13,14 Wheat and chaff, unquenchable fire, weeping and gnashing of teeth – Matthew 8:12; 13:42 Place where the worm does not die and the first is not quenched – Mark 9:44 Paradise and Torment – Luke 16:19, ff Eternal punishment and eternal life – Matthew 25:46
The Power of Choice • Man has free will • Self surrender a choice – may refuse • Two kinds of people: • Say to God “Thy will be done” • God says “thy will be done.” • All that are in Hell, choose it • Matthew 23:37 “you were not willing” • Revelation 2:21 “did not repent” • 2 Chronicles 36:17 “until there was no remedy” • Romans 1:25 “exchanged the truth of God for a lie” • Romans 1:28 “acknowledged God no longer”
Place of Deprivation, Exclusion, Banishment • Matthew 22:13 – “into outer darkness” • Matthew 25:10 – “and the door was shut” • Matthew 8:12 “cast out into the outer darkness” • Matthew 25:41 “Into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels”
Hell is Locked From the Inside • 2 Peter 2:9 “to keep the unrighteous under punishment” • Revelation 20:10 “they will be tormented day and night forever and ever” • “They enjoy forever the horrible freedom they have demanded, and are therefore self-enslaved just as the blessed, forever submitting to obedience become through all eternity more and more free.”
So What Do We Want God To Do? • Wipe our their past sins, and give them a fresh start, smoothing every difficulty and offering every help possible? • He has done this on Calvary • To forgive them without repentance? • They will NOT be forgiven! • Leave them alone? • That is what He does!
Heaven is Not a Bribe • Heaven offers nothing that a worldly-minded soul can desire • Pure in heart shall see God – Matthew 5:8 • “I hope I can keep painting there” • “I hope I can continue my writing or photography pursuits” • God is NOT Their Passion • Matthew 6:33 “seek first”
Eternal Distinctiveness • Pantheism – god is everything and everything is god and in the end everyone will be absorbed into the divine • God created a world of men distinct from Him – Genesis 1:26 • Even the Son of God, Who is eternal and uncreated was still “with” God in the beginning – John 1:1 • We remain distinct individuals – Matthew 8:11
Why Make The Sacrifice? • “Why must I take up my cross and deny myself to obtain eternal life?” • Has this person never realized that God practices self-giving and demonstrate Himself as being truly God? • The more selfless one becomes, the more one demonstrates they are in God’s image, the more they demonstrate a spirit being and a noble creature • Matthew 20:25-28
