1. The University of Akron Postsecondary Enrollment Options Program

2. What is the Postsecondary Enrollment Options Program? • The Postsecondary program, or Senate Bill 140, was created by the Ohio Legislature to allow high school students to supplement their high school curriculum by taking college courses while still in high school. • Two options are provided: • Option A: Allows the student to receive college credit only. Students are responsible for all costs associated with the program, including tuition and fees, textbooks, supplies, and materials. • Option B: Allows the student to receive both high school and college credit simultaneously. Required textbooks and tuition and fees related to the coursework are provided for the student at public expense.

4. 9th and 10th GradePostsecondary Requirements • 3.75 cumulative GPA • 26 ACT composite or 1150 SAT combined (math & critical reading) score • B+ in all English courses • Letter of recommendation • Submit an essay of why you want to enroll in the Postsecondary program • 9th and 10th graders may enroll in only one class per semester

5. 11th and 12th GradePostsecondary Requirements • 3.30 cumulative GPA with a 24 ACT composite or 1110 SAT combined (math & critical reading) score or • 3.50 cumulative GPA with ACT or SAT scores for placement (student must meet qualifying scores to test into Math and English courses) • 11th and 12th graders may take up to 14 credit hours per semester • Students wishing to take more than 14 credits may appeal to, Mr. Greg Dieringer, Executive Director of Student Initiatives

6. How to Apply • Complete an Undergraduate Admission Application • Pay the $45 application fee • Submit high school transcripts • Submit the College Prep Form • Submit ACT or SAT scores (testing must be completed prior to the application deadlines) • The application deadline for the fall semester is May 15 • The spring semester deadline is October 15 • Students applying to enroll at the Akron Campus, MCUC, the Midpoint Campus • Center, the Lakewood Center or in distance learning classes must apply to the Akron Campus. • Students applying to enroll at Wayne College must apply to Wayne.

7. Postsecondary Expenses • Admission Application fee ($45) • ACT/SAT Test fees • Confirmation fee to attend orientation - $125 • Parking fees - $160/semester (if enrolled in 5 or less on-campus credits) • Other Potential Expenses • Students must pay tuition expenses to the school district for any course withdrawals or failed courses.

8. New Student Orientation • All Postsecondary students must attend a New Student Orientation. • During Orientation you will: • Complete placement testing (if needed) • Meet with an academic adviser • Register for classes • Receive your Zip Card (UA ID)

9. General Postsecondary Information • PSEOP students follow The University of Akron calendar/schedule. • Your attendance is mandatory, as it is in high school. • UA transcripts will be issued to the students’ respective high schools once all textbooks and non-consumable items have been returned at semester’s end. • Students can access their grades on the UA website through the “My Akron”.

10. Academic Requirements/Policies • Students must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA to remain in good academic standing. • Students are responsible for adhering to all University rules and regulations as published in the Undergraduate Bulletin.

11. Academic Support and Resources • Students are encouraged to use academic support resources such at tutoring and the Writing and Math Labs. • Online tutoring is also available, especially for students enrolled in distance learning classes. • Students are also encouraged to take full advantage of resources such as the Library and free internet and email services. • Mandatory advising appointments are required to register each semester.

12. Class Selection • Postsecondary students may take a wide variety of university classes, but many take general education classes which also fulfill high school graduation requirements. The only restrictions on classes are that students must meet necessary placement and/or prerequisite requirements. • Classes have included: • Gov’t & Politics in the U.S. • Economics • English Composition • Health and Fitness • Geography • Geology • German • Chinese • Psychology • Sociology • Speech • State and Local Government • Mathematics • Art • Music

13. Options after High School • Always remember that your participation in PSEOP is the start of your college transcript. • To continue at UA after graduation, you must reapply as a new freshman in your senior year. • You do not have to pay the application or orientation fees again. • You will be eligible for scholarship consideration and selective opportunities such as the Honors College at UA.
