Africa’s energy mix: The Future Integrated markets will dictate the right energy mix
Africa needs to accelerate the integration of its power markets • Current situation: Africa has 3% of the world’s installed capacity (the United States has 25%) • African countries should give priority to large centralised projects • But must also consider decentralised power projects when this makes economic sense • The right energy mix should be a combination of non-commercial fuels (more sustainable biomass use) and commercial fuels (natural gas, hydro, coal) • Each region should focus on the most available, reliable and acceptable energy resources
Integrated power markets will help address Africa’s current challenges • The integration of power markets will increase electricity supply reliability • This would also provide a way to capture the hydro-energy potential of the continent • Integrated power markets should facilitate the financing of projects • Integrated power markets should improve accessibility to power • Power pools facilitate the transition from single buyer models to competitive supply models
How to accelerate the integration of power markets in Africa • Accelerate energy reforms • Give priority to cross-border projects • Develop regional energy trading • Improve the flow of energy information
