World Class University Program • Quality and excellence in research • Competitiveness of institutions of higher education • Decrease Brain Drain • As a key strategy towards obtaining a competitive edge in higher education as well as improving the national economy, the South Korean government created a national project to reverse Korean brain-drain phenomena and begin attracting prominent researchers and scholars to Korea. • Process • The project’s 1st call attracted a total of 477 proposals from 66 universities. Proposals for types 1 and 2 were evaluated over a course of two months following a three-stage assessment procedure consisting of a panel review, international peer review and comprehensive panel review. As a result, 52 proposals from 18 universities were selected as beneficiaries of the 1st-round WCU subsidy. In the category of type 3, 79 proposals made it to the final selection as a result of a two-stage evaluation process consisting of a panel review and a comprehensive panel review. • Type 2 Employing foreign scholars in existing academic programs • According to this project type, foreign scholars are recruited and employed as full-time faculty members in existing departments and academic programs at Korean universities, to conduct joint research with Korean academics. Recruited foreign scholars are expected to be capable of developing new growth engine technologies and also creating interdisciplinary studies. • Type 1: Establishing new academic departments or specialized majors
Goals of IEU • Observations and data processing of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB): Observations and unprecedented precision and test of the standard model of cosmology • Important role in coming world-class satellite-borne experiments • Understanding fundamental physics at the early universe including inflation: contribute standard theories of universe and interactions of elementary particles including gravitation on conclete experimental/observational grounds • Search for the origins of dark matter and dark energy: testing the physical effects of dark energy from matter survey and accelration rate measurements, and thus pinning down the mysterious constituents • Developments of innovative deep space technologies • Education of young students in the field of fundamental science and space technology • Promotion of science to Korean society
