  2. Academic Advisement Academic advisors are available to assist students in the selection of classes based on test results and major. Advisors track and monitor students to ensure that students stay in compliance with the state’s mandated test requirements.

  3. Bridge Builders Tutors The mission of the Bridge Builder program is to help those students who are experiencing academic problems that cause them to fall below University academic standards. These students are TEST Responsible (i.e. have not passed all sections of the state mandated academic assessment) or have been placed on academic alert, probation, and in some instances, suspension. In order to retain these at-risk students, Bridge Builders gives each student one-on one tutoring. Tutorial services are available in a number of basic subject matters and is available to all TSU students. Tutors are trained in supplemental instruction and are available for our students.   4. Community Service Assistance Program (CSAP) This program brings together Texas Southern University students with members of the Houston Business Community to assist with the academic and personal growth of TSU students through mentoring and community service.

  5. Dual Advisement The initiative seeks to assist students in making a smooth transition from GUAC to their major departments by developing relationships and information exchange among all advisors. A yearly open house is conducted on how to best promote academic retention and better service for GUAC students.

  6. Early Warning Systems This program is designed to track student attendance through developmental classes. This program brings together academic advisors and developmental instructors to ensure students remain on task and are successful in class.

  7. E-mail Advisement @ E-Mail Advisement is designed for students to communicate with academic advisors using available technology to maximize further the effectiveness of advisors. The program also targets students to advise them of registration deadlines and dates as posted by the University.

  8. General University Academic and Learning Assistance Center (GUALAC) GUALAC provides remediation for students who enter the University academically under-prepared, enrichment seminars for those who seek to improve their academic performance and tutorial services for all future TSU alumni. Additionally, GUALAC provides computers and instruction, as well as individualized group tutoring sessions in the areas of Math, Reading and Writing. Online options for commuters and study areas for on-campus students are also available.

Intensive Academic Support Program (IAS) Intensive Academic Support provides a structured environment to promote academic achievement and responsibility to students who have fallen below the University’s GPA standing of a 2.0. Students receive weekly tutorial assistance and attend workshops that promote academic success as well.

  11. Major Fair The Major Fair is designed to expose undeclared students to the wide variety of majors offered at TSU and to provide the opportunity to speak with representatives of the various departments about the majors offered and their requirements.

  12. Mentoring.com Mentoring.com is an initiative geared to promote mentorship of all incoming freshmen by TSU alumni and staff via the web. When students feel connected, they tend to stay.

  13. Second Mile Program Second Mile is a program aimed at improving the retention rates of second year students at TSU through two key strategies: (1) intensification of the support mechanisms for program participants, which are traditionally provided to first year students, and (2) the creation of unique opportunities for sophomores to develop effective leadership skills through a leadership course designed to specifically address the needs of second year students. Participants are monitored and tracked from the sophomore year through graduation and the first year after graduation.

  14. Social Adjustment to College Life (Soc211) This orientation course is geared to all incoming freshmen. This course addresses adjustment to college, life issues and academic success. Additionally, this course is designed to familiarize students with all the services and programs offered by the University, as well as the history of this great institution.

  15. Study Hall Study Hall provides all TSU students with a quiet place to study, along with access to tutors and computers. Study Hall is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm in the Robert J. Terry Library 4th floor.

  16. Summer Academy The Summer Academy Institute is an eight week program for graduating high school seniors who have not passed the ASSET or THEA test. The students’ are given an opportunity to prepare for college level courses; experience interactive technology-based instruction; and benefit from low student/teacher ratios.

  17. Supplemental Instruction The purpose of this program is to augment TSU instructor’s lessons by promoting dialogue and providing a more interactive learning environment for our students.
