Dead Bird Hotline 2015 Statistics (as of 11/23/15) • 9,409 calls made to the hotline • 12,200 dead bird reports • 3,886 birds were submitted for testing • 3,128 birds were tested for WNV • 1,316 birds tested positive (42%) Dead Bird Report Breakdown • 32% received via phone call (hotline) • 55% received via website (internet reports) • 13% entered directly by agencies via CalSurv

  10. 2015: $44,000 from MVCAC to fund three staff (staggered April 15 – Oct. 15, 1 part-time; Sun-Mon, 8 - 4:30) Hotline operators: • Reviewed the information from the caller • Determined the bird species • Evaluated whether a bird met the criteria to be picked up by the local agency for testing • Entered information directly into Gateway • Provided instructions to the caller for pick-up by the local agency or on safe disposal • Notified local agencies immediately of the report or pick-up; faxed dead bird reports to the agency

Hotline Operator Duties con’t • Reviewed reports submitted on-line and notified local agencies of birds suitable for testing • In many instances, contacted the submitter via phone or email for additional information • Responded to requests from local agencies to close zip codes or limit collection to certain bird species • Answered general questions from the public about WNV
