  2. The Element of Line • In Math: Lineis defined as a mark that spans a distance between two points (or the path of a moving point) • In Art: most basic element of art design and can be used to show feelings, ideas and movement

  3. 5 Main Types • Vertical: move up and down • Horizontal: move from side to side • Diagonal: lean to one side • Zigzag: made by connecting diagonal lines • Curved: gracefully move and turn (can form spirals or circles)

  4. Folk Art • Art coming from a culture or group of people that shows who they are and their every day lives through art.

  5. The Huichol (Wee-chol) • Native American Indians who live in North central Mexico • Descendants of the Aztec Indians • Society that farms in mountainous regions

  6. Yarn Paintings • Are not meant to be decorative but to show their religion and culture. • Document their life and relationships to everything around them.

  7. What lines do you see? How many colors can you count?

  8. Yarn paintings are created by applying wax to a surface and pressing yarn into the wax. Artists would use anywhere between 10-50 colors and sometimes 50+

  9. Creating our own. • Think about 1-3 things from your life that are significantly important to you. • Use line to draw and simplify the object to its most basic form. Sketch 2-3 ideas.

  10. How to do it. • Sketch final idea on the final piece of paper. • Think about the colors that make up the object(s) • Use at least 3 colors per object. • Using glue, begin applying glue to paper and wrapping yarn to create the object.
