Elements of Design • The tools of design • Hands on - can be manipulated • Space • Line • Form and shape • Texture • Pattern • Color
Space the final frontier :) • The three dimensional expanse that a designer is working with. • The boundaries and limits on the functional and decorative things you can do.
things you need to know about space • Positive space: Those spaces occupied by the substances in the room • Negative space: The areas around and behind the positive spaces. • Use space to create: • Room Arrangement: Using the existing space effectively through furniture placement. • Focal Point: The area that demands attention as soon as someone enters a room.
Positive & Negative Space • Negative Space • Empty Space • Example – Area under the desk.
Positive & Negative Space • Positive Space • Filled Space • Example – The Desk
Positive & Negative Space • All rooms should have a balance of both positive and negative space. • The next few slides will give you design tips on how to make a small room feel less claustrophobic and how to make a big room feel more cozy.
To help a small area feel spacious • Allow for large open areas and empty space • Use mirrors • Use small prints, patterns, and textures • Use light, cool colors
Space What is the positive space in this room? What is the negative?
To help a small area feel spacious • Allow as much floor to show as possible • Place large pieces of furniture near walls • Furniture should be up off the floor and not bulky
To make a large area feel intimate • Place furniture perpendicular to walls • Group furniture according to areas of activity • Use large furniture that sits directly on the floor
Book assignment • Read about space starting on page 393-394 • Why do people need distance between themselves and others? • How can personal space be incorporated into a home’s design? • How is space used on page 393? How is the space divided into areas for storage, work, and relaxation?
Positive & Negative Space assignment • Think this out first so you create something intentionally. • Cut a large shape from the half sheet of paper provided by the teacher. Throw away all scraps. • Cut the shape into AT LEAST NINE or more pieces—BE SURE NOT TO LOSE ANY PIECES FROM THE ORIGINAL SHAPE. • Re-form the pieces into the original shape on the second sheet of paper provided by the teacher—kind of like putting a puzzle together.
Expand the shape by gradually sliding the pieces apart. Experiment with different amounts of negative space between the pieces. After deciding upon the most pleasing arrangement, glue the pieces to the sheet of contrasting cardstock. • Handwrite your label SPACE in professional, capital, block lettering, centered and level, at the bottom of your page. First in pencil and then over that in fine point sharpie. • On the back of the presentation define positive and negative space and describe how you used them to make your design more interesting. Also your name. • Erase all pencil marks and guidelines.
