  2. Soviets Dominate Eastern Europe • Background • Satellite Nations = Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Albania, and East Germany • Their industry was catered to USSR

  3. Soviets Dominate Eastern Europe • March 5, 1953  Stalin Dies • Nikita Krushchev come to power • Destalination (De-Stalin-ation) • Denouced Stalin for jailing and killing • “Peaceful Competition” with capitalists

  4. Opposition from Satellite Nations • October 1953  Hungary • Army + Protesters overthrew GOV • Imre Nagy (IHM-ray nahj) formed new GOV • Promised free elections • Soviets respond • Used tanks and infantry • Invaded Budapest • New GOV of pro-soviet leaders • Nagy executed

  5. Brezhnev and the Revolt in Czechoslovakia • Krushchev lost prestige as a result of Cuba Missile crisis • 1964 he is removed from power • Leonid Brezhnev is his replacement • He is the opposite of Krushchev • Oppessive, censors, strict laws • Made it clear he would not accept descent

Prague Spring? • August 20, 1968 Warsaw Pact Nations invaded • Justified because they were stopping the rejecting of communism

  7. Split with China • 1950 Mao and Stalin signed a 30-year treaty of friendship • Sometimes BFFs don’t last for F • China grew tired of being the “junior partner” • Began to spread their own form of communism • 1959 Soviets cut off tech support for China

  9. Brinkmanship Breaks Down • Brinkmanship Failed • It just brought crisis after crisis • U2 Incident • Cuban Missile Crisis • These actions prevented a calming • Popular protests against Vietnam War

The United States Embraces Detente • Détente • A policy of loosened Cold War tensions • Came from realpolitik • Replaced brinkmanship • During administration of Richard Nixon • Change of policy • Went to Communist China • Realpolitik • German origin • Meant to deal with other nations in a practical manner

  11. Nixon Visits the Communist Superpowers • 1972 Visited Beijing • Three months later went to USSR • Began series of meeting called (SALT) • Strategic Arms Limitation Talks • 1973 a limit was set • Helsinki Accords • 1975, 33 nations joined USA and USSR in commitment to Détente

  12. Detente Cools • 1981 Ronald Reagan Takes Office • Leads retreat from Détente • 1983 Announces Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) • Star Wars  nickname from movie • Tensions increase • A shift in power in USSR leads to final thaw of Cold War
