Current Security Services • Institutional Accounts including both subscription services and pay per use services. • Customization and limited personalization managed by library. • Web based scripting provides remote access capability with local control.
Institution Description • Institutional Members: An institution that has signed an agreement with a Regional Service Provider pledging to contribute all of the institution’s current, Roman alphabet cataloging to WorldCat. • Institutional non-members: May license services • Institutional Control: Institutions are assigned basic authorization rights at service signup. Resources are granted to institutions based on the service contract.
Issues and Goals • Security Issues: • Increased granularity needed to reduce institution costs • Inability to delegate rights effectively • Limitations of IP address based services • Security Goals: • Broaden secure access to services • Reduce cost of providing services • Enable rapid change in services delivered as market demands
Levels of Precision • License terms anticipate the limitations of the current technology. • Improvements in technology will enable more precise licensing terms. • Precise licensing enables lower resource costs.
Procedure Effectiveness • What works • Autho/Password and IP well understood and deliver consistent, reliable results. • What doesn’t • Local programming is required to move access beyond campus level IP address. • Administrative and support costs high for both provider and institution.
Recent Projects • DLF - Digital Library Authentication and Authorization Architecture – 2000 • Software worked. • Human interaction required too high. • Athens Access Management System – January 2001 • Successful implementation in UKHE. • Translation module as opposed to full Athens service.
Plans • Enable local resource rights delegation within current technology. • Enable limited personalization (my.oclc) • Improve access to a broader range of content • More formats (more journals, e-books, e-text, etc.) • International • Evaluative Content • Knowledge Bases • Local Content
