WHAT? What is a point prevalence survey? • A count of ‘events’ in a specified population at a point in time • What is the WA Safety and Quality Point Prevalence Survey? • Obtain and analyse data in order to understand performance against NSQHS Standards
WHEN? • May 2014 • A hospital will be surveyed each day in the month of May, 2014
WHERE? Which hospitals will be involved? • All WA Health metropolitan (14) hospitals including Joondalup and Peel • 6 WACHS hospitals • Bunbury • Albany • Kalgoorlie • Broome • Geraldton • Port Hedland
WHAT? What will we be measuring? • Valuable information which will be used to improve patient safety across WA Health • Standard 3 - Healthcare associated infections • Standard 4 - Medication safety • Standard 5 - Patient identification • Standard 8 - Pressure injuries • Standard 10 - Falls • Venous thromboembolism (VTE)
WHAT? What type of data is being collected? • Patient Identification: How many patient id bands does the patient have? What colour are they? • HAI: How many PIVC does the patient have? Has the PIVC been in situ more than 3 days? • Pressure Injuries: How many pressure injuries does the patient have? What type of pressure relieving support surfaces are in place?
WHICH? • Which patients will be included? • All multi day inpatients admitted before midnight before day of survey Exclusions • Dialysis patients • Psychiatric patients • Unqualified newborns • Hospital in the home clients • Day surgery patients • Day procedure patients
HOW? What will my role be as a surveyor? • Paired with clinical team member • Direct patient contact • Data collection on iPads • Examining the medical record What can I do to get involved? • Volunteers are needed to be surveyors • No clinical experience is required • Commit to an education session and at least one survey day • Get your team involved
Education session • Mar – April 2014 • Half a day, various venues • How to sign up for a session • How to use survey tool • Interactive session including ipads • Quiz
Survey days • Arrive for a pre-briefing • Allocated to teams • Receive iPads • Conduct survey • Site coordinator and support
May 2013 WHY? Why should I participate? • Hands-on hospital experience • patient skin assessments • reviewing patient medical records • Continuing professional development (CPD) • Education days – CPD points • Survey days – AHPRA’s Recency of Practice
What happens with the data? • Raw data provided to hospitals • Prevalence analysis • Data linkage and statistical analysis by UWA
