The Event Tommie Smith and John Carlos both ran in the 200m sprint in the 1968 Summer Olympics. Tommie won the race and John came 3rd.
The Racism • When Tommie Smith and John Carlos were on the podium receiving their medals, they proudly raised their arms for the Black Power Salute. This was in honor of the Black Race. Meanwhile the white people booed them off the stage.
Symbolic Meanings • Although Tommie and John raised their arm as a Black salute, they also did more. • Both Tommie and John walked out with no shoes on to symbolize the black slavery. • They also walked out with black gloves on to show the Black race • And they unzipped their track suit tops to show all blue collar workers respect, black and white.
The Outcome • After the 1968 Olympics both Tommie Smith and John Carlos were kicked out of the American Olympic Athletic Team. • They were still athletes and physically fit so they both became Superstar NFL players.
