Language –nourish it! • Includes spoken or written words • Enables us to express our thoughts and feelings • Comes from the Latin word that means “tongue” • Is made up of socially shared rules that include: • What words mean • How to make new words • How to put words together • What word combinations are best in what situations • “Our language is funny- a fat chance and a slim chance are the same thing.” J.   4. Receptive Understanding others Ability to follow directions Expressive Sharing thoughts, ideas, and feelings completely Language –grow it! Pragmatics-the ability to understand another speaker’s intended meaning, learned by experience, social aspects, body language. “I have been a believer in the magic of language since-at a very early age, I learned that some words got me into trouble and some got me out.” Katherine Dunn

  6. “Communication skills are the heart of the educational experience.”“Managing” Effective Teaching Practices • Hemisphericity/Check student’s instructional level/Two modes of input • Figurative language • Inform the student • Model • New terminology • Practice visualizing • Present vocabulary first • Provide immediate feedback • Relate new concepts • Repeat directions • Say “THIS IS IMPORTANT” • Share positive comments • Specify purpose • Use mnemonics in class • Word problems: teach the clue words • LISTEN!

  7. “Preparing” Language Interventions • Model • Extra time • Listen • Request a repetition • Reduce teacher output • Rephrase directions • Provide semantics cues (give lifelines!) • Encourage descriptive language • Show how nonverbal cues are important

  8. “Tilling” Language Activities Relationships are the key. Learning does not take place in the context of the classrooms; it happens in the context of relationships!

  9. “Confidence looks good on everybody.”Soapbox • Believe in your classroom! • Every child has a gift…find it! • Reduce anxiety..increase engagement. • Develop relationships! • Celebrate all steps in the right direction! • You have the power!

Challenge • Take every opportunity to explore language! • Cultivate relationships! • Get HYPE! • Be Committed! • Be at the your classroom door in the morning when students are entering your class for the day and when they are leaving for the day! • Watch your language…you can make or break someone with your words!
