Jesus is challenging what they thought about God, sin, relationship and salvation. Jesus is teaching that the religious and the irreligious are equally lost. The younger brother—destructive and self-centered. The Older brother—moralist and self-righteous.
II. (Re) Defining the Pursuit of Happiness All these years I have been serving you…Lk 15:29a Give me my share of the estate Lk 15:12 Each son is finding personal significance and self-worth through self-discovery or moral conformity. Both were wrong and both were loved.
III. (Re) Defining Righteousness The spirit of the polder brother is when life does not work as planned we are not just sorry but get angry, feel superior and bitter.
Take away… Q: How can the inner dynamic of the heart be changed? From anger and or fear to love, joy, peace and gratitude. We need the initiating love of God in our lives. Jn 3:16; Rm 5:8 Inner heart be changed—become a new creation 2 Cor 5:17
