Responsible for Own Learning – What does that mean? • CHOICE “Why are youhere?“What are your expectations for the course?” • Ss see that their choices have results(clear goals by teachers so Ss can have success, choices, precise feedback, assess own learning)
What’s wrong with this picture? • I walked into a teacher’s class. It was a few minutes after the start of the period. S/he was finishing up with some preparation. Many of the Ss were sitting and chatting without a notebook or book out on their desks. Then the teacher turned around and said “Good afternoon!” and told the Ss to take out their books. The Ss then reached into their bags and took out their books.
What’s wrong with this picture? • Student asks the teacher to quickly translate a word for them from Spanish to English.
Do we need them to need us? • Is it fair to treat them like dependents and then turn around and say “Well, they don’t want to learn”. • What do I do to keep my Ss dependent on me? • What do I do to encourage my Ss passivity?(solution) • Once we’ve established control(cuz you need it) do we let go? • Do they feel comfortable to say “I don’t understand? Ok, how often does this happen?
The start of class • Sign a contract – for rules and for work • What will you accomplish by the end of the semester? • 1. You have an “A” – everyone in the class. – it’s yours to lose – how can you lose it? • 2. Imagine a year from now and you have an A in the class – how did you • get it?
Class president, etc.(Marisela) • Responsible for links with embassy(information lost through the chain)-China • Elections • Take attendance, etc. • Meet with a supervisor, etc. to air grievances, concerns, suggestions- create an Access student council (part of democracy packet)- meet with sites
Choices for homework • What choices do they have? • Give them a study buddy – informs them if absent • Get groups to study together for a test • NQA coupons(3) • Create a test- Ivania
At the beginning of the semester, the Reading Team issues 3 No Questions Asked (NQA) coupons to each student. Students may use these coupons to turn in homework one class late without any explanation required. Once the 3 coupons are used, no more are given. However, to provide students with an incentive to complete all assignments on time, we provide 10 bonus points to a student who turns in all four unused NQA coupons at the end of the semester. http://www.oncourseworkshop.com
Don’t SAVE the student • To you give them a homework extension because of a crisis or bad planning?
