  2. General Info • The River Styx is one of five rivers that is the separation between the living and the dead. • Origin of name: Styx is derived from the Greek word stugeinwhich means hate. • There is no story of the river styx, just references in other stories.

  3. In some versions of the story it is said that Charon, the ferryman, would transport souls across the river. • In ancient times it is believed that if a coin was placed in the mouth of the deceased, the toll would be paid and the soul of the deceased could cross the river to the underworld.

  4. There is a goddess/nymph named Styx. She was named after the river by Zeus. • The gods took binding oaths upon the river (referenced in story of Bacchus-Ariadne) • If a god broke an oath, Zeus would force them to drink the river water which would cause voice loss for nine years.

  5. The River Styx in Achilles • In some stories it is stated that the river has healing power • At Achilles’ birth it was predicted that he would die in battle. • To prevent his impending death Achilles’ mother dipped him in the river to acquire invulnerability • His mother held him by the heel when she dipped him, therefore his heel did not acquire the powers from the river. Dante’s Inferno • The river styx is featured in fifth circle of hell out of eight circles of hell. • It is described as miserable swampy waters which two different sinners spend eternity: • The Wrathful perpetually struggle against each other • The Sullen are trapped below the waters, choking on mud

  7. In popular culture • Appears in film Clash of the Titans. • Appears in the video game franchise, God of War. • There is a popular 80’s band named Styx. • A painting called Laguna Estigia(translates to River Styx) by Félix ResurrecciónHidalgo
