Complex Aerospace Systems Exchange Allen Arrington NASA Langley, Hampton, VA September 29, 2011
New Conference/Event Offering • Most of AIAA’s conferences are technology based. • Focused on the technical disciplines. • Cater to academia. • No opportunity to present/discuss systems or complex systems development, integration and test. • Focus will be more on the development and management of complex systems. • Still technical content, but perhaps not the primary focus. • Three general focus areas (conference tracks): • Complex Systems Development • Integration, Test, and Verification of Complex Systems • Program Management and Support for Complex Aerospace Systems • Content to include case studies, lessons learned, best practices. • Forum to discuss systems level issues with folks working in system development.
New Conference/Event Offering • Complex Aerospace Systems Exchange. • Pasadena, CA • September 11-13, 2012 • Planning committee is headed by Laura McGill (Chief Engineer, Air Warfare Systems, Raytheon Company) and Allen Arrington (wind tunnel guy). • Conference Leadership: • Executive Chair: Mike Griffin (Director, Center for System Studies, UAH) • Technical Chair: Laura McGill • Track Chairs: • Paul Collopy (UAH, Center for System Studies) • Allen Arrington • Abdi Khodadoust (Boeing Engineering Operations & Technology)
Complex Aerospace Systems Exchange • Different target audience: • Chief Engineers. • Program/Project Managers. • Folks transitioning from technology-focused to systems-related projects. • Still developing the overall look and feel of the event. • Most likely will not be the same old technical paper session driven conference. • Much more management and program/project management. • Less emphasis on technical papers. • Looking to build sessions/panels on complex systems topics and issues. • Exchange of ideas, lessons learned. • Transformational event; leave the event thinking differently. • Gain tools and insight from the conference that will allow participants to learn about “the good, the bad and the ugly.”
Opportunity for ATP, AEDC, et al. • Track 2 focuses on Integration, Test, and Verification of Complex Systems. • Probably also ties into Tracks 1 and 3 as well. • This could be a platform to discuss lessons learned and how to improve test processes. • Better integration of the test facilities and personnel in to the projects. • What can the customer and the facility staff do better to ensure success. • Strategic issues facing testing (facilities, technology development, budgets). • Not looking for the “sales pitch” or capabilities review. • Looking for your ideas! • What message do you want to convey? • How big a role would you want to play in this event? • Anything from a presentation (or three) to organizing a session/panel.
