  2. The Liver primary channel connects with the following zangfu: Liver, Gall Bladder, Lung, Stomach.

  3. THE LIVER LUO-CONNECTING CHANNEL • separates from the primary channel at LIV-5 on the medial aspect of the lower leg, • connects with the Gall Bladder channel, • ascends to the genitals.

  4. THE LIVER DIVERGENT CHANNEL • separates from the primary channel on the dorsum of the foot, • ascends to the pubic region where it converges with the Gall Bladder primary channel.

  5. The Liver has five primary functions: • storing the blood. • maintaining the free flow of the qi. • dominating the sinews. • opening into the eyes. • manifesting in the nails.

  6. In addition: • the Liver zang belongs to the wood phase and corresponds to wind. • the Liver governs uprising, and in disharmony its qi may therefore rise excessively. • the Liver free-flowing function assists the qi movement of the zangfu, especially the descending of Lung and Stomach qi and the ascending of Spleen qi.

  7. the Liver stores the ethereal soul (hun) and as the wood zang is the ‘mother’ of the Heart. • the Liver stores the blood which flows into the Conception and Penetrating vessels to become menstrual blood, and its qi is responsible for the smooth flow of menstruation. • the Liver is closely associated with such emotions as anger, irritability, fractiousness, frustration, resentment, depression, weepiness and mood swings.

The actions and indications of the points of the Liver channel can be summarized as: • resolving distention and pain due to stagnation of Liver qi in the head, throat region, chest, Heart, Lung, Stomach, abdomen, lateral costal region, lower abdomen, intestines and genitals. • assisting in the descent of Stomach and Lung qi and the ascent of Spleen qi.

  9. pacifying interior wind and uprising of yang giving rise to headache, dizziness, epilepsy, spasm etc. • cooling Liver fire affecting any region of the body. • benefiting the eyes. • treating disorders characterized by pain and swelling of the external genitals (especially in men) as well as seminal emission, ejaculatory disorders, priapism and impotence.

  10. regulating menstruation and the menstrual cycle. • treating shan disorder. • treating disorders of urination such as urinary retention, painful urinary dysfunction, etc. • treating lumbar pain. • • treating psycho-emotional disorders deriving from Liver blood deficiency, Liver qi stagnation or Liver fire, all of which may disturb the ethereal soul and spirit.

DADUN LIV-1*** • Jing-Well and Wood point • ACTIONS: Regulates qi in the lower jiao, treats shan disorder and alleviates pain, Benefits the genitals and adjusts urination, Regulates Liver qi and stops menstrual bleeding, Revives consciousness and calms the spirit • INDICATIONS: Shan disorder, swelling and pain of the genitals, painful urinary dysfunction, irregular menstruation, uterine bleeding, fright, mania-depression, loss of consciousness.

  12. XlNGJIAN LIV-2**** • Ying-Spring and Fire point • ACTIONS: Clears Liver fire, Spreads Liver qi, Pacifies Liver wind, Clears heat and stops bleeding, Benefits the lower jiao • INDICATIONS: Uprising Liver Fire or Liver Yang: Headache, dizziness, red painful eyes, nosebleed, coughing blood, palpitations, anger, fright, windstroke; Genital pain and itching, shan disorder, uterine bleeding, menorrhagia, early menstruation, pain and swelling of the instep.

  13. TAICHONG LIV-3***** • Shu-Stream, Yuan-Source and Earth point • ACTIONS: Spreads Liver qi, Subdues Liver yang and extinguishes wind, Nourishes Liver blood and Liver yin, Clears the head and eyes, Regulates menstruation, Regulates the lower jiao

Liver Yang / Liver Wind: Headache, dizziness, epilepsy, childhood fright wind, hypertension. • Liver Qi Stagnation: Lateral costal distention and pain, sighing, pain of the Liver and Heart, breast pain, epigastric or abdominal pain, shan disorder. • GYN / OB disorders: Amenorrhea, irregular menstruation, uterine bleeding, uterine prolapse, insufficient lactation.

  15. Spirit disquiet: Insomnia, frustration, anger, melancholy, depression, anxiety, irritability, frequent sighing. • GI: Jaundice, vomiting, vomiting blood, nausea, constipation, diarrhea. • Urinary: Enuresis, difficult urination, retention of urine, edema. • Lumbar pain and lower leg pain or weakness, pain in general.

  16. ZHONGFENG LIV-4*** • Jing-River and Metal point • ACTIONS: Spreads Liver qi and regulates the lower jiao, Clears Liver channel stagnant heat • INDICATIONS: Pain and retraction of the genitals, shan disorder, cold shan disorder, seminal emission with or without dreams), difficult urination, periumbilical pain, jaundice, lumbar pain, contracted sinews, ankle pain.

LIGOU LIV-5**** • Luo-Connecting point. • ACTIONS: Spreads the Liver, regulates qi and benefits the genitals, Clears dampness and heat from the lower jiao, Regulates menstruation, Treats plumstone qi • INDICATIONS: Genitals: itching, swelling, pain, shan disorder, difficult urination, dysmenorrhea, irregular menstruation, leukorrhea, prolapse of the uterus; Qi stagnation: plumstone qi, depression, belching.

  18. ZHONGDU LIV-6* • Xi-Cleft point of the Liver channel • ACTIONS: Spreads Liver qi and regulates the lower jiao, Regulates blood, Drains damp • INDICATIONS: Shan disorder, lower abdominal pain, diarrhea, persistent uterine bleeding, motor problems of lower limb. • “rarely used” - Deadman

  19. XIGUAN LIV-7* • ACTIONS: Dispels wind-damp, Benefits the knee and relaxes the sinews • INDICATIONS: Swelling and pain of the knee, crane’s knee wind.

  20. QUQUAN LIV-8*** • He-Sea and Water point • ACTIONS: Clears damp-heat from the lower jiao, Benefits the genitals, Invigorates blood and benefits the uterus, Nourishes blood and yin • INDICATIONS Lower jiao damp-heat: Swelling/itching/ pain of the genitals, impotence, seminal emission, difficult urination, diarrhea; uterine prolapse, abdominal masses in women due to blood stasis, headache, dizziness, nosebleed, red eyes, knee pain.

YINBAO LIV-9** • ACTIONS: Adjusts menstruation and regulates the lower jiao • INDICATIONS: Irregular menstruation, PMS, difficult urination, retention of urine, enuresis, lumbo-sacral pain extending to the lower abdomen. • JA: Liver Yin def eye disorders • Modern TCM: part of alcoholism treatments

  22. ZUWULI LIV-10* • ACTIONS: Clears damp-heat and benefits the lower jiao • INDICATIONS: Difficult urination, retention of urine, enuresis, itching/swelling/pain of the genitals.

  23. YINLIAN LIV-11* • ACTIONS: Benefits the uterus • INDICATIONS: Infertility, irregular menstruation, pain in the inner thigh and knee. • Deadman: “Many classical texts recommend moxibustion at this point for the treatment of infertility.”

  24. JlMAI LIV-12* • ACTIONS: Eliminates cold from the Liver channel and benefits the lower jiao • INDICATIONS: Pain of the genitals, swelling of the testicles, uterine prolapse, shan disorder, pain of the inner thigh.

ZHANGMEN LIV-13*** • Front-Mu point of the Spleen • Hui-Meeting point of the zang • ACTIONS: Harmonizes the Liver and Spleen, Regulates the middle and lower jiao, Fortifies the Spleen, Spreads the Liver and regulates qi • INDICATIONS: Abdominal distension, borborygmus, pain in the hypochondriac region, vomiting, diarrhea, indigestion.

QlMEN LIV-14*** • Front-Mu point of the Liver • ACTIONS: Spreads the Liver and regulates qi, Invigorates blood and disperses masses, Harmonises the Liver and Stomach • INDICATIONS: Hypochondriac pain, masses in the lateral costal region, abdominal distension, hiccup, acid regurgitation, mastitis, depression, gallstones.

  30. Indications of the Conception Vessel • genitourinary problems • gynecological problems • digestive complaints • Heart and chest complaints • Lung complaints • complaints of the throat.

  31. HUIYIN REN-1* • Sun Si-miao Ghost point • ACTIONS: Regulates the anterior and posterior yin, Drains damp heat, Calms the spirit, Promotes resuscitation and revives from drowning • INDICATIONS: Difficult urination and defecation, seminal emission, impotence, genital diseases, prolapse of the rectum, hemorrhoids, amenorrhea, irregular menstruation, uterine prolapse, drowning, ghost diseases.

  32. QUGU REN-2** • ACTIONS: Benefits urination, Regulates the lower jiao, Warms and invigorates the Kidneys • INDICATIONS: Retention and dribbling of urine, enuresis, nocturnal emission, impotence, leukorrhea, irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, hernia.

  34. INDICATIONS: Enuresis, nocturnal emission, impotence, hernia, uterine bleeding, irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, leukorrhea, frequent urination, retention of urine, pain and/or masses in the lower abdomen, prolapse of the uterus, genital itching.

GUANYUAN REN-4***** • Front-Mu point of the Small Intestine • Meeting point of the of 3 Foot Yin • ACTIONS: Fortifies the original qi and benefits essence, Tonifies and nourishes the Kidneys, Warms and fortifies the Spleen, Benefits the uterus and assists conception, Regulates the lower jiao and benefits the Bladder, Regulates Small Intestine qi, Restores collapse

INDICATIONS • Kidney deficiency, lumbar/leg weakness, frequent urination, enuresis, seminal emission, impotence. • GYN: Infertility, amenorrhea, post-partum abdominal pain, leukorrhea. • Spleen qi or Yang deficiency: diarrhea, fatigue. • Damp: Retention of urine, dark or bloody urine, painful urinary dysfunction, edema. • Cold in lower abdomen giving rise to pain

SHlMEN REN-5** • Front-Mu point of the Sanjiao • ACTIONS: Moves and benefits the water passages, Regulates qi and alleviates pain, Regulates the uterus • INDICATIONS: Abdominal pain, diarrhea, edema, hernia, difficult urination, enuresis, amenorrhea, leukorrhea, uterine bleeding, postpartum hemorrhage.

  38. QIHAI REN-6***** • ACTIONS: Fosters original qi, Tonifies qi, Tonifies the Kidneys and fortifies yang, Rescues collapse of yang, Regulates qi and harmonises blood • INDICATIONS • All Qi Deficiency or Qi Stagnation problems • Yuan qi deficiency, all kinds of chronic qi disease

  40. YINJIAO REN-7** • ACTIONS: Regulates menstruation, Benefits the lower abdomen and genital region • INDICATIONS: Abdominal distension, edema, hernia, irregular menstruation, uterine bleeding, leukorrhea, genital itching, postpartum hemmorhage, periumbilical pain.

  41. SHENQUE REN-8** • ACTIONS: Warms the yang and rescues collapse, Warms and harmonises the intestines • INDICATIONS: Collapse of yang qi, loss of consciousness; Deficiency cold of the abdomen, incessant diarrhea, borborygmus, periumbilical pain, infertility from cold in the blood.

  42. SHUIFEN REN-9*** • ACTIONS: Regulates the water passages and treats edema, Harmonizes the intestines and dispels accumulation • INDICATIONS: Water diseases, edema, borborygmus, vomiting after eating, abdomen swollen and hard like a drum, periumbilical pain.

  43. XIAWAN REN-10** • ACTIONS: Harmonises the Stomach and regulates qi, Dispels food stagnation • INDICATIONS: Abdominal fullness, epigastric pain, nausea and vomiting after eating, focal distention, diarrhea d/t food stagnation.

  44. JIANLI REN-11* • ACTIONS: Harmonizes the middle jiao and regulates qi • INDICATIONS: Abdominal distention, pain of the intestines, food stagnation, vomiting, edema.

  45. ZHONGWaN REN-12***** • Front-Mu point of the Stomach • Hui-Meeting point of the Fu • ACTIONS: Harmonizes the middle jiao and descends rebellion, Tonifies the Stomach and fortifies the Spleen, Regulates qi and alleviates pain • INDICATIONS: All diseases of the Stomach and Spleen, epigastric pain and fullness, nausea, Stomach reflux, vomiting, abdominal distention and/or pain.

  47. SHANGWAN REN-13** • ACTIONS: Harmonizes the Stomach and regulates qi, Descends rebellion and alleviates vomiting, Regulates the Heart • INDICATIONS: Pain in cardiac region and chest, nausea, acid regurgitation, difficulty in swallowing, vomiting, mental disorders, epilepsy, palpitation.

JUQUE REN-14*** • Front-Mu point of the Heart • ACTIONS: Regulates the Heart and alleviates pain, Descends Lung qi and unbinds the chest, Transforms phlegm and calms the spirit, Harmonizes the Stomach and descends rebellion • INDICATIONS: Chest pain radiating to the back or lateral costal region, Rebellious qi: cough, accumulation of phlegm in the chest, esophageal constriction, nausea, vomiting, Stomach reflux; mania-depression.

JIUWEI REN-15** • Luo-Connecting point • ACTIONS: Regulates the Heart and calms the spirit, Descends Lung qi and unbinds the chest • INDICATIONS: Mania, fright palpitations; Oppressive sensation in the Heart, chest pain, sighing, wheezing, dyspnea, fullness of the chest, cough, difficult ingestion, Stomach reflux. • Pain of the skin of the abdomen, itching of the skin of the abdomen.

  50. ZHONGTlNG REN-16* • ACTIONS: Unbinds the chest, Regulates the Stomach and descends rebellion • INDICATIONS: Fullness of the chest and lateral costal region, esophageal constriction, difficult ingestion, vomiting.
