OPIUM WAR • British sell Opium (drug) to Chinese • China outlaws opium trade • 1839: British & Chinese go to war • Britain has strongest navy & easily wins • Treaty of Nanjing – 1842 • Britain gets island of Hong Kong • China must open 5 ports to trade • China must grant British exemption of local law • British live under British laws, not Chinese laws

  3. Open Door Policy • China weakened from losing wars • Europe carves “spheres of influence” • U.S.A proposes Open Door Policy • Chinese trade open to all • Prevents China from being colonized • Still at the mercy of western nations

  4. BOXER REBELLION • Chinese frustrated about western imperialism • Secret organization to drive out “foreign devils” • “Righteous Harmonious Fists” - known as Boxers • Spring 1900, Boxers attack foreigners • Surrounded Beijing and kept it under siege for months • 20,000 western troops defeat the Boxers

  5. Chinese Republic • Sun Yat-Sen calls for reform • 3 Principles of the People • Free China from foreigners • Create democracy • Economic security for all Chinese • China becomes a Republic – 1911 • Sun Yat-sen becomes President • Attempts to achieve his “3 Principles”
