  3. Speech writing • Number of main points • In classroom speeches you generally don’t have time to develop more than 4 • If you have too many points your audience will have trouble sorting them out. • If you have too many main points, see if you can group them into categories

Strategic Order of Main Points • Chronological order • To show the time in which events happened, or a procedure • The Great Wall of China was built in three major stages • I Building of the Great Wall began during the Qin Dynasty of 221-206 BC • New sections of the Great Wall were added during the Han Dynasty of 206-220 AD • The Great Wall was completed during the Ming Dynasty of 1368-1644

Strategic Order of Main Points • Spatial order – top to bottom, left to right, etc. • Major regions of Korea • Layers of the earth • Causal order – cause-effect or effect-cause • Reasons for collapse of Mayan Empire • Causes of global warming • Problem-Solution • Why the electoral college needs to be abolished • Action is needed to stop human trafficking • Topical order – dividing the speech into subtopics • Achievements of Audrey Hepburn (as an actress, activist, etc.) • Colleges and Divisions of HUFS

  8. Balancing time • Balance the amount of time between main points • a large imbalance means the other points aren’t really main points or you haven’t given those points enough attention • Some imbalance is ok: 20%, 30%, 50% vs 85%, 10%, 5%
