Encomienda System • Used in the Spanish controlled colonies: • Spanish settlers would provide protection, care, and Catholic conversion to the natives. • In return, the natives would work on the Spanish settlers lands… • However, it didn’t work out so nicely • Spanish plantation owners made the natives into slaves and most of them died from disease and harsh working conditions.

  10. Slavery • Slavery was based upon race. • Native Americans and Africans were considered inferior and only good for manual labor.

  11. Plantation System • Plantations were created to grow as many crops as possible. • Required huge areas of land cleared of natural forests. • Displaced natives and wildlife.

  16. Triangle Trade • Europeans took by force gold and silver from native Americans • Destroyed Aztec and Incan societies in the process. • Spain grew extremely wealthy and powerful as a result.

  17. Middle Passage • The journey from Africa to the Americas for captured African slaves. • Begins when Africans are captured • Ends with being sold in the Americas • About 20% would die along the route • Between 1500 and 1870 about 9.5 million Africans will be brought to the Americas
