The Sociology of Culture Class and Artistic Tastes
Classroom Debate: • Are there national cultures, and/or do they matter?
Important Concepts • Civic Nation • Jus Soli = Being born within the legal, geographical boundaries of a country (or swearing allegiance to a countries laws), is sufficient to become a national citizen • Ethnic Nation • Jus Sanguine = Only being born of a certain ethnic or racial group is sufficient to be a legitimate national citizen
Important Concepts • National “Religions” • Not actually “religions;” rather, nations hold certain ideas as sacred • Two Types: • Civil Religions = Government is subject to society • E.g. (ideally) the democracies of the US and Britain • Political Religions = Society is subject to the government • E.g. (ideally) the communist rule of the USSR
Important Concepts • The Nation vs. The State • The Nation = A group of people who feel that they share a common life and a common destiny • The State = A powerful group that holds the ability to use force • Whoever is “in charge” of any region (no matter how they accomplish this control)
Three Theories • Peterson and Bryson • “Original Omnivore” Theory • Koen van Eijck • “New Omnivore” Theory • Jeff Lundy • “There Were Never Omnivores” Theory
