  11. Fourth Grade Examples of Introductions Poor example: A million dollars is a lot of money. I wish I had a million dollars. I don’t even know anyone who has a million dollars. Good example: Did you know that a million dollars is enough nickels to fill an entire school bus? If I had a million dollars I would put it in the bank to earn interest so I would never have to work a day in my life. Did you realize that the interest on a million dollars is about one thousand dollars a week? 11

  12. Fourth Grade Examples of Introductions Poor example: Spiders have eight legs and no wings. They can live in many places. Spiders spin different kinds of webs. Good example: Time for dinner! If you were a spider you would turn your food into a liquid and drink it like milk through a straw. Spiders usually eat only insects. They poison their prey with a bite and slurp up their supper. 12

  13. Fourth Grade TYPES OF INTRODUCTIONS I gasped as I saw an unexpected shark approaching. • Action - Have you ever thought about what it would be like to be the President of the United States of America? • Question - The sun is about 93 million miles away from Earth. That means if you were able to drive your car to the sun at 60 miles per hour, it would take you 177 years to reach the sun. • Exciting statement or startling fact - “Leave nothing for tomorrow which can be done today.” Abraham Lincoln • Quote - 13

  14. Fourth Grade TYPES OF INTRODUCTIONS • Dialogue- “Hey! You’re not supposed to be in there!” shouted Jamie. • Definition - The word explore means to search or travel for the purpose of discovery. • Description - The dawn over the tropical island beach was orange with ocean spray. Before sunup on this perfectly peaceful morning, the cool ocean breeze caressed the sandy shore. 14

  15. Fourth Grade INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH Topic: Trip to the beach Introductory paragraph #1: Question Have you ever been to the beach? If you haven’t you don’t know what you’re missing. My family and I went to Pismo Beach during vacation and had a wonderful time building sand castles, surfing and swimming in the ocean, shopping on the boardwalk and feeding the seagulls. The best part for me was finding sea creatures in the tide pools. 15

  16. Fourth Grade INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH Topic: Trip to the beach Introductory paragraph #2: Action Crash! The ocean wave broke at my feet as I readied my surfboard to enter the water. My family and I were on vacation at Pismo Beach. We had a wonderful time building sand castles, surfing and swimming in the ocean, shopping on the boardwalk and feeding the seagulls. The best part for me was catching the awesome waves on my surfboard while my little brother watched jealously from the shore. 16

  17. Fourth Grade INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH Topic: Trip to the beach Introductory paragraph #3: Dialogue “Surf’s up, Dude!” yelled my older brother Matt. “Race you to the water, Bro!” We grabbed our surfboards and ran as fast as we could to meet the enormous wave headed our way. “This one’s mine!” I called out over the roar of the waves crashing at my feet. 17
