Stats • Born January 15 1929 and died April 4 1968 • During this time, there was segregation throughout southern U.S.A. this means that blacks were treated differently to whites • Martin Luther King delivered his famous “I have a dream” speech in 1963 at the famous march of Washington to over 250 000 people

  5. Martin Luther King was born in Atlanta, Georgia. An area with a lot of segregation in southern U.S.A. • At a young age he had friends that were white. He was later told he could no longer be friends with them because he was colored. • He wanted to make a difference in America, he wanted blacks to have the same rights

  7. Inspirations • Martin Luther King read many books about Gandhi, he liked his style of trying to fight for something peacefully • He was inspired by another hero named Rosa Parks who refused to give up her bus seat to a white man, and was arrested

Actions • In 1955 in Montgomery, King started a boycott on city buses for blacks, it was very successful • King led many marches to protest for equal rights, such as in Birmingham, Alabama King inspired many blacks to protest in a non violent way, some black students in Birmingham held a protest in a restaurant that did not serve blacks

  9. Actions • The most famous march that King led was the March of Washington in 1963, where 250 000 people from all over America, black and white, gathered to protest • At the march he delivered the famous “I have a dream speech”

  11. Actoins • In 1960 the blacks won the right to vote but they were treated unfairly, very few of the votes counted and some still could not vote. • Martin Luther King still protested

  12. Accomplishments • In 1964, Martin Luther King became the youngest person to win the Nobel peace prize ever at the age of 35 • He succeeded in getting equal rights for blacks in 1964 with the civil rights act which made segregation illegal

  13. Overall • Martin Luther King is a true hero, he started protests and ended up winning. With all the obstacles of whites fighting back he never used violence, always sticking to Gandhi’s tactics. With absolutely no power, he managed to inspire an entire nation to stay with him and fight for something he believed in. He is a hero.
