  2. The Beginning • Olympics traced back 776 BC. • Most famous games at Olympia • 2 games- Isthmos, Pythian • Events happened over several days • Four different types of racing • (Infoplease)

  3. Training • Contained: • Footrace • Swimming • Jumping • Chariot racing • Wrestling • Discus throwing • Based on everyday life • Training program that lasted as least 10 months before the games • Stamina, cardiovascular and strength • (Sportsmangementnetwork)

  4. Role of women • Women were not aloud to watch or compete at the games • Chariot races were held outside the sacred precinct, were open to women spectators • Priestess of Demeter was required to attend • Killed if women was seen at the game • (Period8dolzall)

  5. Events • Only 10 events • 4 different types of running, boxing, Javelin, wrestling, Jumping, equestrian events, pankration, pentathlon, and disc throwing • Used to be a one day festival • All events happen within 5 days

  6. Ceremonies • Opening and closing ceremonies • On the first day no games • Second day was festivities • Third day was a procession to alter Zeus • Fourth day was all sports • Fifth day was award day • (Richeast)
