Higher/intermediate P.E 4/10/11 By the end of today you should be able to describe: Describe what Target Setting is Describe how to set targets And be able to set yourself performance targets
Target setting • Why do we set targets? • To give a focus, purpose and direction to training • To improve and be able to perform to a higher level in competitive situations • To avoid boredom and keep a high level of motivation • To ensure practices/training are effective • Principles of Effective Practice
Principles of effective Practice • If we consider the following principles, then we can plan and carry out an effective training programme. This will result in achieving set targets • S.M.A.R.T.E.R Targets • Specific • Measurable • Achievable • Realistic • Timed – Phased • Exciting • Recorded
Specific • Training must catered for the individual • It must relate to their stage of learning • And be specific to the activity • Can you give and example of this?
Measurable • When setting targets they must be measurable. • For example: I am going to attempt to play a drop shot and land the shuttle between the net and my opponent’s service line. • How do we measure targets? • Video, Scatter Diagram? Any others?
achievable • Why must be set achievable targets? • We must be able to achieve and succeed at practices. • If the practices are too difficult for the performer’s stage of learning then they won’t be achievable • To perform at a higher level there must be success achieved throughout the training program.
realistic • The practices must be realistic for the individual. • They must be tailored to the stage or learning • They must be specific to a competitive badminton match • What would be a realistic target for you in badminton?
Time phased • To avoid the onset of fatigue, training must allow for recovery. • This recovery time is essential in performing to the best of your ability • Recovery will also maintain a high level of motivation • Think about a difficult practice and how you could introduce a recovery time to ensure you could perform the skill to the best of your ability.
Exciting • Practices must be exciting and challenging. Why?! • Maintains high levels of concentration and motivation • How long should practices be? • What happens if we train for too long?
Recorded • Why is it important to record targets? • Make a record of a training goal in your training diary • Keeps track of progress • Keeps the individual focused on improving
