Are oil and vinegar the same or different substances? Student’s Response: Answer the Question CLAIM: Oil and vinegar are different substances. Key words from theQuestion EVIDENCE: As evidenced by the lab I did in 5th grade, when I mixed oil and vinegar, the oil floated to the top. From textbook REASON: Oil and vinegar are different substances as proven by their densities. If you mix oil and vinegar, then oil will float on top of the vinegar because it is less dense. Substances withdifferent densities are different substances.
Why Do We Use Scientific Explanation? Science is fundamentally about explaining phenomena. Students should be able to persuade their peers that their claims are justified.

If he had not created the electric light bulb we might still be reading by candlelight.
