  1. Cigarette Smoking Increases the Risk Of Formation and Rupture of Intracranial Aneurysms Shelebra Bartley Master’s Project Dr. Grimes

  2. If you are a woman with a brain and you smoke…

  3. Your brain will EXPLODE

  4. Quick Review • An aneurysm is a weakened spot on a blood vessel that balloons out and fills with blood • The aneurysm can put pressure on surrounding nerves or it can rupture causing blood to spill into the surrounding tissue

  5. 3 Types of Aneurysms • Fusiform • Berry • Lateral

  6. Berry Aneurysm • Aka saccular aneurysm • Attached by a neck or a stem to an artery • Accounts for 90% of all aneursyms

  7. Berry Aneurysm

  8. How to diagnose an Aneursym? • CT angiography • Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) • THE GOLD STANDARD • INTRA-ARTERIAL CATHETER ANGIOGRAPHY

  9. Arteriogram CT Scan

  10. Treatment Options • REFER • REFER • REFER

  11. Education • Stop smoking • Stop drinking • Control blood pressure

  12. Helsinki Research Results • Studied 278 subjects • Age 15-60 with subarachnoid hemorrhage • 314 patients in control group • Research team studied the effects of cigarette smoking, alcohol intake and HTN on the rupture of intracranial aneurysms

  13. What they found… • Current cigarette smoking especially in women is an independent risk factor for formation and rupture of intracranial aneurysms • Current smokers and previous smokers had more aneurysms than did those who had never smoked regularly

  14. Johns Hopkins Research • Angiography confirmed intracranial aneurysms • 419 patients dx with intracranial aneurysm • 127 had multiple aneurysms • Women and hx of smoking

  15. Anybody need a smoke break?

  16. University of Colorado • 92% of patients with aneurysms larger than 24mm • 78% of patients with aneurysms ranging in size from 13.3mm to 24mm • 66% of patients with aneurysms smaller than 13mm

  17. WERE SMOKERS

  18. IN CONCLUSION • Evidence has shown that cigarette smoking increases the rate of formation and rupture of intracranial aneurysms • Cigarette smoking and female gender can be identified as an independent risk factor

  19. If you are a woman with a brain and you smoke…your brain will explode
