  2. Desegregation Brown vs. BOE (1954) Court struck down on “separate but equal” which was determined in Plessy vs. Ferguson (1896)

  3. Per-Pupil Expenditure San Antonio Independent School District v. Rodriguez (1973) Supreme Court ruled that schools can have a more relaxed standard for justification of funding

  4. Students with Limited English Proficiency Lau v. Nichols (1974) Court held that Title VI requires districts to have an ESOL course

  5. Special Education BOE v Rowley (1982) Ruled that IDEA gives special needs students a right to a “free and appropriate public education”.

  6. Accommodation Disabilities School Board v Arline (1987) Court said that “it depends” on the disability and whether it can infect others

  7. Saluting the Flag West Virginia State BOE v. Barnette (1943) Court ruled that public school officials may not force students to salute the flag.

  8. Student Speech Tinker v. Des Moines (1969) Teachers and students do not “shed constitutional rights” but that they must “applied in light of special characteristics of school environment”

  9. Censorship Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeir (1988) Principals may exercise content based control.
