  1. Florida Geographic Data Library 2012

  2. Class Lessons • Lesson 1: Introduction to ArcMap • Lesson 2:Introduction to the FGDL • Lesson 3: FGDL Metadata • Lesson 4: Basic GIS Analysis • Lesson 5: Advanced GIS Analysis using FGDL Data

  3. Introduction to FGDL Geographic Information SystemsandThe Florida Geographic Data Library The University of FloridaGeoPlan Center

  4. What is the FGDL? • FGDL - the Florida Geographic Data Library • A Digital “Library” storing Florida's geographic data • Stored and maintained at the University of Florida's GeoPlan Center, a GIS research and teaching facility(www.geoplan.ufl.edu)

  5. What is the FGDL? • A mechanism for gathering, organizing, and distributing spatial (GIS) data that have been created with public funds, by state and federal agencies, throughout the State of Florida. • Currently, there are over 350 current and historic GIS layers in the FGDL, from over 35 local, state, federal, and private agencies. FGDL includes data on Land Use/ Land Cover, Hydrography, Soils, Transportation, Boundaries, Environmental Quality, Conservation, Census, and more. FGDL contains primarily vector GIS data layers. • Currently distributed via the Internet (www.fgdl.org)

  6. Why have the FGDL? The main benefits of the FGDL are its contributions to the availability, clarity and uniformity of Florida's databases: • Availability - Data can be distributed at less cost and more efficiently between state agencies and to the public and private sectors. Anyone can download the data for free from the FGDL website (www.fgdl.org).

  7. Why have the FGDL? Additional Benefits • Clarity - Data are organized for use so that individual users will no longer be required to understand the more technical aspects of GIS to be able to accomplish geographic information analysis. • Uniformity - Data are organized with a standard format, projection and documentation; many users will not have to do any additional data processing in order to begin analysis.

  8. How was the FGDL funded? Earlier versions of the FGDL were developed primarily with the support of: Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) Currently, the lead agency supporting development of the FGDL is: Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT)

FGDL Data Sources Thus far, over 30 state, federal and local agencies; nonprofit organizations and private companies have contributed their data to the FGDL.

  10. How FGDL Data was prepared by GeoPlan GeoPlan puts data layers through a Quality Assurance (QA) and Documentation procedure consisting of: • Checking consistency of spatial features. • Reprojection of spatial features into FGDL standard map projection. • Conversion of data into standard format (shapefiles for vector data) • Creation of Metadata – both FGDL format and FGDC (Federal Geographic Data Committee) • Documentation of attribute items and their definitions.

  11. Prior Versions of FGDL Data • FGDL 1.0 was released in the Summer of 1998 • Contained 3 CD-ROM Series • Contained 80 Data Layers • FGDL 2.0 was released in the Summer of 1999 • Contained 11 CD-ROM Series • Contained 164 Data Layers

  12. Prior Versions of FDGL • FGDL 3.0 was released in the Fall of 2000 • Contains 5 CD-ROM Series: COUNTY, STATE, COAST, DORTAX and FDOT CONTRACT • Contains approximately 250 Data Layers • FGDL 2003 was released in November 2002 • Contains 6 CD-ROM Series: COUNTY, STATE, COAST, DORTAX, FDOT CONTRACT, and CENSUS • Contains approximately 300Data Layers and over 90 relate tables

  13. Prior Versions of FDGL FGDL Version 2004 was released in Spring 2005 • 3 DVD Categories: • County Data (Grouped by DOT Districts), 1 DVD (State and Coast), 1 DVD (Update: State, County and Coast) FGDL Version 2005 was released in Spring 2006 • 3 DVD Categories: • County Data (Grouped by DOT Districts), 1 DVD (State and Coast), 1 DVD (Update: State, County and Coast)

  14. Prior Versions of FDGL FGDL Version 2006 was released in Spring 2007 • 3 DVD Categories: • County Data (Grouped by DOT Districts), 1 DVD (State), 1 DVD (Update: State) Last version available on DVD……

  15. FGDL Download Site: FGDL Metadata Explorer Benefits: • Constant updates are made to the online Metadata Explorer whereas DVD or CD series were only updated annually. • Users can Search & Browse through FGDL and download data • Web address: http://www.fgdl.org/metadataexplorer/explorer.jsp • Can also be accessed from regular download page: www.fgdl.org

  16. FGDL Metadata Explorer: http://www.fgdl.org/metadataexplorer/explorer.jsp

  17. FGDL Metadata ExplorerSearching Data • Search through particular theme/ category (ISO Topic Categories) • Search using a specific keyword or multiple words

  18. Biota Boundaries Climatology/ Meteorology/ Atmosphere Economy Elevation Environment Farming Geoscientific Information Health Imagery/ Base Maps/ Earth Cover Inland Waters Intelligence/ Military Location Oceans Planning/ Cadastre Society Structure Transportation Utilities/ Communication FGDL Metadata ExploereISO Topic Categories International Organization for Standards (ISO) Metadata Standard (ISO 19115) provides a set of Topic Categories that organize data into 19 subject headings. (Data can be in more than 1 category).

  19. FGDL Metadata ExplorerBrowsing Data • Layers can be in more than one category. • You can view ALL FGDL data layers by clicking on the ‘All’ category

  20. FGDL Metadata ExplorerBrowsing Data: ISO Categories

  21. FGDL Metadata ExplorerSearch/ Browse Results page • Sortable table • FGDL Added – Date the layer was added to FGDL for distribution. Not to be confused with “Source Date” of layer. • Can download directly from results page or click on View Details to read more about the layer.

  22. FGDL Metadata ExplorerView Details Layer summary • Thumbnail • Download Data • Read FGDC Metadata

  23. FGDL Metadata ExplorerFDOT Layer Distribution • Login to FGDL Metadata Explorer to download non-publicly distributed data layers

  24. FGDL Mailing List As a subscriber you will be notified of changes to the FGDL database or new resources. You can also use the list to ask questions about the FGDL. Send an email to: Majordomo@geoplan.ufl.edu • Leave the Subject blank • Type “subscribe fgdl-fdot-l” in the body

However, the projection for FGDL data prior to Version 3 is different. Hence, data from FGDL Version 3.0 and higher cannot be used immediately with FGDL 1.0 or FGDL 2.0 data without errors. Fortunately, the older data can be reprojected into the new projection so that the data is consistent. The projection information is as follows:
