Prevalence of Mental Illness By the numbers: • Mental illness – depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, addictions, anxiety and eating disorders – constitute the #1 public health problem facing Americans. • 1 out of 4 people are affected by mental illness in their lifetime. Less than half receive adequate treatment. (Reports from the Surgeon General)

  4. Prevalence of Mental Illness By the numbers: • 26.2%, approximately 60 million, adult Americans suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in any given year. • Depression alone affects up to 14.8 million American adults (The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), 2009)

  13. The Problem: Access to Quality Care Only about one-fifth of the 60 million Americans suffering from a diagnosable mental disorder will receive adequate care. At least three-fifths will seek medical treatment instead of mental health care. An estimated 60 percent of all primary care visits are to some extent related to depression or anxiety. (NIMH, 2009)

  18. The Bottom Line Together we can make a paradigm shift happen. Some of the work is already being done. Cincinnati has a tremendous opportunity to be a national leader.
