  1. Grant, Sherman, and Appomattox Nearing the end!

  2. Confederacy is down for the count… • No food • No money • Angry citizens • Every southern state except South Carolina had soldiers switch sides • Active and open meetings held in southern states to oppose the war

  3. Ulysses S. Grant • “Unconditional Surrender” Grant • Threw men into battle – “the Butcher” • Lost an additional 60,000 after Gettysburg (7,000 in an hour) • Knew attacking was the only way to win

  4. Total War for Sherman • “Sherman’s March” • Blazed a trail of destruction from Georgia to South Carolina • 100,000 men, left a trail 60 miles wide from Atlanta to Savannah then continued on to SC • Once in NC they knew the war was over- handed out food and supplies • Sherman’s victories in the Confederate states secured Lincoln a second term

  5. Appomattox • Surrender at Appomattox Court House, VA • Grant and Sherman’s victories put Davis on the run • Fled CSA capitol and set it on fire – March 1865 • Lee agreed to meet Grant for surrender- April 1865

  6. Generous Terms from Lincoln • South surrendered • Allowed to keep their firearms (officers only), horses, possessions, and return home without punishment • Given rations (food) to help them on their journey home

  7. Civil war is over • Took two months for resistance to die down • South still carries their pride (confederate flag as seen everywhere) but the Union won the war • Confederate states “reabsorbed”

Costs of the war • Money- • Union: 2.3 billion- but industry was booming • Confederacy: 1 billion- lost slave labor and 40% of livestock • South only had 12% of the nations wealth • Casualties • Union- 360,000 people • Confederates- 275,000 people • Injury • Union- 275,000 people • Confederates- 225,000 people
