Factors of the Event • Took place on April 9, 1865, at the house of Wilmer McLean in the village of Appomattox, Virginia. • The terms of surrender lasted nearly two and a half hours, taking place inside the parlor of the McLean house. • Final military engagement of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee and his army of Northern Virginia. • Last major battle of the Civil War, ending the bloodiest conflict in our nation’s history. • Battle ended with 154 casualties for the Union and approximately 500 for the Confederacy, along with 27,805 Confederates surrendered and/or paroled.
